Mind Boggling
By Falconer
This book had two reviewers before me, one is unintelligible and the other admits that they haven't read the book. I have read it and it's implications are mind boggling. Usually books that deal with related subjects are written by crack-pots and people who don't fully understand the science they write about. Professor Burr was E. K. Hunt Professor of Anatomy at Yale University School of Medicine so he was as main stream as you can get. And, you can rest assured that he understood the science and implications behind his research.

Briefly speaking Dr. Burr discovered that every living thing generates an electro-dynamic field that serves as a matrix directing it's growth. He called these living fields "L-fields". The L-field maintains the arrangement of whatever material is within it, no matter how often that material changes. L-fields determine the shape, and are determined by the body generating them.

Dr. Burr wrote: "The following theory may then be formulated. The pattern or organization of any biological system is established by a complex electro-dynamic field which is in part determined by it's atomic physio-chemical components and which in part determines the behavior and orientation of those components. This field is electrical in the physical sense and by it's properties relates the entities of the biological system in a characteristic pattern and is itself, in part,a result of the existence of those entities. It determines and is determined by the components.

More than establishing pattern, it must maintain pattern in the midst of a physio-chemical flux. Therefore, it must regulate and control living things. It must be the mechanism, the outcome of whose activity is wholeness, organization, and continuity."

Dr. Burr found that a study of L-fields could predict growth and dis-ease in a body. He worked with, what some call, "the energy body" to predict the growth and disease of the physical body. This means we are susceptible to the ebb and flow of electromagnetic fields in the rest of the universe. This was discovered by a main-stream scientist!! Since him not many main-stream scientists have touched this research even though it's implications could completely change our world view!

Usually one has to read a book about, what the Chinese call 'Chi'; the Japanese 'Ki' and the Indians 'Prana', to get a taste of where Dr. Burrs research can take us. Unfortunately, such works usually contain so much pseudo-science and Eastern philosophy that one easily gets lost in it.

If you want the real science behind all this...read Dr. Burrs book. It will boggle your mind!!

a classic from an expert in the field
By Amazon Customer
I have not yet read this book, but in the absence of any other reviews, I should point out that it is a classic frequently referred to in many other books on energy medicine. Burr was a professor at Yale who did experiments in the 1970s and was able to detect electrical fields around plants and animals, which he called the "l-field" or "life field." This book appears to be a summary of his findings and their implications, written for the lay person, followed by the technical results of his experiments for those who may wish to read his methodology for himself and possibly repeat it.

Most practical author I've read on the subject!
By P. Carlson
After all these years this is one of my most highly recommended books for married couples. It's an excellent accompaniment to Love Life For Every Married Couple, also by Dr. Wheat. My observation is that he sheds better light on building and maintaining a marriage than many theologians are doing. Very practical and refreshing in confusing days, even though originally written decades ago. I've used it in many cross-cultural situations and find his books trans-cultural because of how he promotes biblical principles for marriage without compromise. There are no shortcuts or magic formulas to a healthy marriage, and Dr.Wheat confirms that. Highly recommend The First Years of Forever by Wheat for new or engaged couples, and then his other two books early in marriage... and after 20, 30, or 40 years!

Contemporary Economic Sociology: Globalisation, Production, Inequality, by Fran Tonkiss

Contemporary Economic Sociology closely examines critical and contemporary issues in the sociology of economic life.

Bringing together a range of theoretical perspectives, Fran Tonkiss examines major shifts in the organization of economy and society - from the politics of globalization to the cultural economy, social exclusion and the 'end' of class. This new volume is organized around three core themes (globalization, production and inequality) and answers the questions:

  • how are transnational processes re-making contemporary economies?
  • can capitalist globalization be governed or resisted?
  • do class relations still shape people’s social identities?
  • how can we think about inequality in national and international contexts?

Key changes in each of these domains raise new challenges for analyzing social and economic relations, power, agency and identity. Setting these changes in a transnational context, this book examines how these issues are being re-shaped in contemporary societies, and explores competing frameworks for understanding such changes. Drawing on arguments from economic sociology, politics and policy studies, political economy and critical geography, the text focuses on both conceptual approaches to the social study of the economy, and trans-national processes of social and economic restructuring.

The arguments provide a critical overview of current concerns for economic sociology, and extend the boundaries of the discipline to a new set of questions. The text is particularly relevant to undergraduate and graduate students and scholars in the fields of economic and political sociology, politics and government, geography, economics and international relations.

Take this book to Paris!
By Jane Newhagen
I'm in Paris as I write this and I'm so happy to have this little guide book along. A couple of the "secrets" have either closed or are under renovation, but the book has introduced me to lots of gems. Who knew about the little street "Rue du Chat qui Peche,: let alone the fact that it was built in 1540 to give people access to the Seine? I highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning a trip to Paris. Of 500 secrets, some are sure to be of interest to everyone.

This book might be a little outdated for 2016, but still has good info for Paris.
By Julie W. Snyder
A fun book to give to someone who is traveling to Paris. Lots of gems and ideas. Be aware that this book is probably already dated somewhat. A friend took this with her and said that she was disappointed when she found out that some shops had closed and establishments had changed hands. But that is true of travel books in general. Just be sure and check places out.

DISAPPOINTING
By Margaret Smith
While well researched, this little book disappointed with a superficial and fairly uninteresting selection of "hidden secrets" in Paris. There are other published guide books to Paris "secrets" that are far, far better. You might want to check out what else is available in this genre before choosing to purchase The 500 Hidden Secrets of Paris.

The Last Kingdom (The Saxon Chronicles Series #1), by Bernard Cornwell

The first installment of Bernard Cornwell’s New York Times bestselling series chronicling the epic saga of the making of England, “like Game of Thrones, but real” (The Observer, London)—the basis for The Last Kingdom, the hit television series.

This is the exciting—yet little known—story of the making of England in the 9th and 10th centuries, the years in which King Alfred the Great, his son and grandson defeated the Danish Vikings who had invaded and occupied three of England’s four kingdoms.

The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on Wessex (Alfred’s kingdom and the last territory in English hands) Uhtred almost thinks of himself as a Dane. He certainly has no love for Alfred, whom he considers a pious weakling and no match for Viking savagery, yet when Alfred unexpectedly defeats the Danes and the Danes themselves turn on Uhtred, he is finally forced to choose sides. By now he is a young man, in love, trained to fight and ready to take his place in the dreaded shield wall. Above all, though, he wishes to recover his father’s land, the enchanting fort of Bebbanburg by the wild northern sea.

This thrilling adventure—based on existing records of Bernard Cornwell’s ancestors—depicts a time when law and order were ripped violently apart by a pagan assault on Christian England, an assault that came very close to destroying England.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Cornwell leaps back a millennium from his Richard Sharpe series to tell of the consolidation of England in the late ninth century and the role played by a young (fictional) warrior-in-training who's at the center of the war between Christian Englishmen and the pagan Danes. (Most of the other principal characters—Ubba, Guthrum, Ivar the Boneless and the like—are real historical figures.) Young Uhtred, who's English, falls under the control of Viking über-warrior Ragnar the Fearless when the Dane wipes out Uhtred's Northumberland family. Cornwell liberally feeds readers history and nuggets of battle data and customs, with Uhtred's first-person wonderment spinning all into a colorful journey of (self-)discovery. In a series of episodes, Ragnar conquers three of England's four kingdoms. The juiciest segment has King Edmund of East Anglia rebuking the Viking pagans and demanding that they convert to Christianity if they intend to remain in England. After Edmund cites the example of St. Sebastian, the Danes oblige him by turning him into a latter-day Sebastian and sending him off to heaven. Uhtred's affection for Ragnar as a surrogate father grows, and he surpasses the conqueror's blood sons in valor. When father and adopted son arrive at the fourth and last kingdom, however, the Danes meet unexpected resistance and Uhtred faces personal and familial challenges, as well as a crisis of national allegiance. This is a solid adventure by a crackling good storyteller.

From Booklist
An acknowledged master of rousing battlefield fiction as evidenced by his crackling Richard Sharpe series, Cornwell also deserves praise for his mesmerizing narrative finesse and his authentic historical detailing. Here he introduces a new multivolume saga set in medieval England prior to the unification of the four Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria, East Anglia, Mercia, and Wessex. Weakened by civil war, Northumbria is invaded by the fearless Danes, and Uhtred, the rightful heir to the earldom of Bebbanburg, is captured by the enemy. Raised as a Viking warrior by Ragnar the Terrible, his beloved surrogate father, Uhtred is still torn by an innate desire to reclaim his birthright. Fighting as a Dane but realizing that his ultimate destiny lies along another path, he seizes the opportunity to serve Alfred, king of Wessex, after Ragnar is horribly betrayed and murdered by Kjartan, a fellow Dane. Ever watchful and ever practical, Uhtred awaits his chance to settle the blood feud with Kjartan and to seize Bebbanburg from his treacherous uncle. Leaving his hero suspended on the threshold of realizing his desires, Cornwell masterfully sets up his audience for the second volume in this irresistible epic adventure. Margaret Flanagan

English history mingled with fiction. An outstanding read,
By TeeKay
I'm still in the glow of living vicariously in Uhtred's world. I can't begin to tell exactly why this story affected me so deeply, except to say that the author did everything right. He lost no time making me care about the main character, just a child at the beginning of the story. Within the first dozen pages, I was hooked, invested in the story--wanting to know more, and needing to know young Uhtred's fate.

The narration is first person, and occasionally, throughout the story, the narrator intrudes, addressing the reader directly. While in some books, this doesn't work, in The Last Kingdom, it worked so well, I anticipated when it would happen, and I looked forward to it. Each time, it upped the tension just a knot. Another thing that worked incredibly well was that this entire book is told by Uhtred as an old man, sharing the tale of his life, looking back on events--

An incredibly entertaining stroll through 9th century, English history mingled with a few fictional characters. Outstanding read.

Epic Historic Fantasy! (Spoiler Free Review)
By Poisoned Blade
If you're into gritty heroic historic fantasy and have an interest in the Viking Invasions of England, then you'll enjoy this book.

Story
In the 9th Century, the Danes (Vikings) raid England in search of wealth, bloodshed, and conquest. King Alfred must skillfully negotiate, muster his armies, and win key battles to turn back the ruthless invaders! The story is told from the perspective of a young warrior, Uhtred, who ends up fighting for both sides in the wars. Legendary Viking Invaders, Ragnar, Ivar, and Ubba play key roles in the story.

Characters
The characters are all deep and well written. They have their own motivations for their actions and their beliefs. The main character is Uhtred, the second oldest son of an English nobleman, who watches cities fall and suffers great triumphs and losses throughout his life. As he grows into manhood, his beliefs are shaped by the Viking warlords and the Christian leaders of England.

Writing Style
The story is told from Uhtred's point of view as he reflects back upon his youth. He was a young boy when the story begins and this book covers about a decade of his life. He witnesses the destruction of towns, the slaughter of armies, and both cultures first hand. Because Uhtred is a warrior and not a scholar, the writing style is plain, simple, but still manages to be epic and visceral!

Action
The book is fairly action packed with battle strategies, tactics, politics, and epic battles! You feel the carnage of a shield wall and the terror of sailing through stormy seas in a leaky boat and the thrill of victory. There are fights, duels, skirmishes, and large scale battles with thousands of soldiers. The battles are exciting and the characters suffer consequences as a result.

Fantasy
This is a historic book based on the Viking Invasions. There's some superstition, but no magic spells, dragons, evil spirits, or goblins. Well, there is one goblin, but he's a dog. When the races and cultures are well defined and the action is exciting, you really don't need fantasy.

Maturity: Teen
There's some drinking, some war, some womanizing, but no sex or swearing.

Overall
This is a great book based on the Viking Invasions of the 9th Century. There heroes are memorable, the battles are epic, the story is fast paced, and the plot twists will keep you turning pages.

Buy it if you love Vikings.
Buy it if you're interested in medieval war.
Buy it if you're interested in 9th Century History.
Buy it if you love heroic war stories.
Avoid it if you need a Poetic Writing Style, like the prose of Robert Jordan.
Avoid it if you need dragons, elves, wizards, etc...
Avoid it if you are deeply Christian and are offended by Christianity being mocked by the Danes.

If you enjoyed this book, read something by David Gemmell! Legend, The Lion of Macedon, Sword in the Storm, Winter Warriors are all great books! You'll also like a fairly new book called Blood Song by Anthony Ryan. It's amazing!

Powerful story with strong characters and twists and turns - even if you are a 9th century historian
By Kevin
I don't do a synopsis so that I don't give anything away. It's easy to tell that Cornwell is a master story teller who can take on an epic tale, the scope is the creation of England, with a huge cast of characters. He keeps it entertaining and although there are many characters and locations I never felt lost or confused. That's due to Cornwell's ability to a tale on such a grand scale and never forget the reader. Another potential place a reader could, but doesn't, get confused is with the ancient languages of the Danes and the tribes of England and Britain. I love that the story is told as memories by Uhtred, the main character, as he looks back on events of his life. We don't know at what point or the circumstances of Uhtred's current life as he's telling the story but it is masterful that Cornwell chose this method because Uhtred can let the reader in on information, clarify really, that could be difficult to understand in the context of telling his story to you, the reader. Apparently there is a lot of historical accuracy in this story but as is usually the case with Cornwell you don't notice the history, while you're learning, because of the complexity and the struggles both fictional and historically real characters are going through. Cornwell never lets his characters get ahead without a price and that's true for Uhtred, Alfred, Ragnar and many other characters in this book. I highly recommend the story and I'll say that this is hours of inexpensive and worthwhile entertainment. Buy it.

Very helpful!
By Paul
I only had two weeks to prepare for my final, and within two weeks I went through all of the practice problems. The study guide problems are similar to the actual test problems. However, the study guide is more math-based, and the final usually has less math and more theory. You won't have to make a lot of calculations on the actual test due to time constraints. It is also too difficult to finish the test if every problem were a math problem. Some formulas are given on the test. This book is mostly review if you studied throughout the semester. Have your notes out for quick reference. Drill through the problems once or twice. Don't worry too much about the math (although you should be able to do it anyway), and just understand the concepts really well. My final had 70 questions, and I only had two hours. Once I started the test, I noticed that some questions were pulled from the study guide which is made up of questions from past final exams. If you do the study guide, you will be able to recognize some study guide questions, and this should give you the upper hand. Also, I scored a 52/70 on my final which probably puts me in the 80-90th percentile. Keep in mind that I only had two weeks to prep. This study guide was definitely helpful and easy to understand, although some questions were phrased strangely.

Lack of content but cheap
By Riss
As someone that took both the gen chem I and II exams, I wouldn't recommend buying this because the content in the book is so condensed and what frustrated me the most was the practice questions had no explanations ...only the answers! I wish the authors would provide explanations for the practice problems. The book is relatively cheap (if you find a used copy rather than buying it off the publisher's website) so if you want some "practice" preparing for the ACS, buy the book but my warning is DO NOT rely on the book solely for your ACS exam

Not a replacement for studying but a great suppliment
By Amazon Customer
A good study guide to test your knowledge and give direction to your studying. Saying that, if you have a great chemistry teacher and feel comfortable with your knowledge, it isn't worth it. My teacher left my entire class feeling unprepared and there was a huge difference in the grades of those who bought this guide and those who didn't. This isn't a replacement for studying, but it can be a wonderful buy.

Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus: A Ghost Story and a Biography, by Clifton Crais, Pamela Scully

Displayed on European stages from 1810 to 1815 as the Hottentot Venus, Sara Baartman was one of the most famous women of her day, and also one of the least known. As the Hottentot Venus, she was seen by Westerners as alluring and primitive, a reflection of their fears and suppressed desires. But who was Sara Baartman? Who was the woman who became the Hottentot Venus? Based on research and interviews that span three continents, Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus tells the entwined histories of an illusive life and a famous icon. In doing so, the book raises questions about the possibilities and limits of biography for understanding those who live between and among different cultures.

In reconstructing Baartman's life, the book traverses the South African frontier and its genocidal violence, cosmopolitan Cape Town, the ending of the slave trade, the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, London and Parisian high society, and the rise of racial science. The authors discuss the ramifications of discovering that when Baartman went to London, she was older than originally assumed, and they explore the enduring impact of the Hottentot Venus on ideas about women, race, and sexuality. The book concludes with the politics involved in returning Baartman's remains to her home country, and connects Baartman's story to her descendants in nineteenth- and twentieth-century South Africa.

Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus offers the authoritative account of one woman's life and reinstates her to the full complexity of her history.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. While the body of Sara Baartman (1789–1815), also known as the Hottentot Venus, has been the subject of intense Western scrutiny (she was regarded as a paradoxical freak of race and sexuality, both alluring and primitive) and exploitation to the point of postmortem dissection, little is known about her life beyond her careers as sideshow exhibit and posthumous icon for a variety of causes, from artifact repatriation to the evils of science. Crais (The Politics of Evil) and Scully (Liberating the Family) chase down obscure references to Baartman's life in South Africa and discover a rich if difficult life: a woman who loved and lost and traveled farther (from Cambedoo and Cape Town to London and Paris) than many of her peers. Her life personifies the shames of colonialism, slavery and gender persecution, but Baartman showed too much independence to be reduced to mere victim or symbol (The more iconic Sara Baartman became, the more she stood for a range of causes, the less complicated her past became). The authors dig deep into the limited remaining evidence but the biography wears its research lightly, a backdrop to this well-written and fascinating story of a woman who remains an elusive figure. From Booklist
Sara Baartman, a young South African woman brought to London in 1810 and displayed seminude to show off her ample bottom, was named the Hottentot Venus by her captors and managers. Historians Crais and Scully examine the cultural context of Baartman’s exploitation in Europe as Westerners grappled with issues of race and sex and later racialized science. Baartman attracted the attention of prominent British abolitionists and French scientists as well as voyeurs. After five years of researching archives and libraries and conducting genealogical research to uncover some of Baartman’s relatives, the authors also look beyond Baartman’s life as a curiosity and an exhibit to explore her life as a woman. Crais and Scully place Baartman’s contributions in such areas as the rights of the unlawfully detained, global feminism, and later—when her body was returned to South Africa from France—the politics of indigenous identity. Readers who enjoyed African Queen (2007), by Rachel Holmes, will appreciate this further examination of the life of an extraordinary woman. --Vanessa Bush

Review
"Professors Clifton Crais and Pamela Scully of Emory University have done an excellent job not only of telling this rebarbative story but of putting it into the context of its time. . . . No one, however, has succeeded as well as Crais and Scully in illuminating not only her important role as icon and symbol but, so important, the human being behind them. Because of their diligent research and their deep understanding of the era in which she lived--along with their sensitivity to our own time and concern--they have truly given us the 'living breathing person' that was 'Sara Baartman, the human being who was ultimately destroyed by an illusion.'"--Martin Rubin, Los Angeles Times

"[Crais and Scully] chase down obscure references to Baartman's life in South Africa and discover a rich if difficult life. The authors dig deep into the limited remaining evidence but the biography wears its research lightly, a backdrop to this well-written and fascinating story of a woman who remains an elusive figure."--Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

"The authors…look beyond Baartman's life as a curiosity and an exhibit to explore her life as a woman. Crais and Scully place Baartman's contributions in such areas as the rights of the unlawfully detained, global feminism, and later--when her body was returned to South Africa from France--the politics of indigenous identity. Readers who enjoyed African Queen (2007), by Rachel Holmes, will appreciate this further examination of the life of an extraordinary woman."--Vanessa Bush, Booklist

"This is a thrilling, provocative and interesting exploration. The reader learns about how Baartman's life was transformed once she became the Hottentot Venus, and is given a vivid snapshot of what the sociopolitical and ideological climate of Europe was when Baartman reached its shores. Crais and Scully literally recover Baartman--the public spectacle and the 'scientific discovery'--as so much more. Not only is this book a fascinating read, it will also have done much to restore the historical record in Europe and the US. It is an important and necessary contribution to the existing discourse on Sara Baartman's impact on contemporary ideas of race, sexuality and the European conception of primitivity."--Kaila Adia Story, Times Higher Education

"Clifton Crais and Pamela Scully explore the curious juxtaposition of celebrity and degradation that followed Sara Baartman after she was brought to Europe and put on exhibit, an 'ethnopornograhic freak.' But Crais and Scully are interested in much more than the Hottentot Venus; their aim is to honor Baartman, and they do so with biography that is speculative as well as research-driven."--Joe Taylor, Foreword Magazine

"This biography faced a formidable research challenge in resurrecting a forgotten woman. . . . With such a seemingly unknowable subject, the authors refrain from putting words into Sara's mouth. Rather they reconstruct her life and times, placing her in context. . . . Remarkable."--Lucy Sussex, The Age

"The authors stitch together the pieces of Baartman's life--no small task with so little known about the woman herself--and at times veer necessarily toward the speculative. They . . . admirably attempt to look past the symbol to the woman herself, who led an extraordinary life amid rapidly shifting social and scientific cultures."--Julie Biando Edwards, Library Journal

"This meticulously researched book drags Baartman out of the ugly mythology that characterised her European life and restores her to humanity. It is a model biography because the sources for her real life are scarce and the authors, both academics, had to tease a rich life out of very frail strands of information."--Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald

"[Sara Baartman and the Hottentot Venus] stands out for the lengths it goes to present the person behind the myth. Crais and Scully uncovered details unknown or long forgotten about her life before she became the Hottentot Venus, her personal dealings when she was off the stage, and some of the characters who fill out her story. The authors gather these facts together with a narrative style that richly evokes the smells, sights, sounds, and mores of the worlds in which Baartman dwelled."--Susan Frith, Johns Hopkins Magazine

"In this beautifully written and multilayered biography, Emory University professors Crais and Scully distinguish between the woman and the exhibit in order to restore the ghost to her own narrative. Tapping a wide range of archives, the authors reconstruct the Gonaqua society into which she was born and the Cape society where she worked as a domestic servant in the late 18th century before moving on to more familiar European territory."--C. Higgs, Choice

"The authors are to be commended on an illuminating analysis of the complexities of contact between Europeans and other cultures in the somewhat misnamed Age of Enlightenment. They have produced a gripping biography of an extraordinary woman."--Barbara Bush, Women's History Review

"[T]he book is a significant contribution to the literature on Baartman which will become essential reading for anyone interested in her life, as a living woman or academic subject. The impressive archival work that has been used to recapture so much of Baartman's elusive life is illuminating; although necessarily speculative in parts, on the whole, the book's arguments have been grounded in a well-contextualised and evocative history of the Cape region, London and Paris. Given abiding interest in Baartman's life, the book's accessible style will recommend it to a wide audience, both within and outside the halls of academia."--Sadiah Qureshi, Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History

"Ghosts are by nature elusive; their tales designed to haunt. Yet this rich 'ghost story' cum biography is elegantly turned, contesting accepted notions. It is a valuable contribution."--Maureen Isaacson, Sunday Independent

"Crais and Scully's extensive new research has produced a rich and interesting biography that is a worthwhile read even for those familiar with the story. As well as providing the most detailed account of Baartman's life, the book is an illuminating insight into the broader contexts of colonial society at the Cape. . . . The real achievement of Crais and Scully's book lies in its readability and the fresh insights it provides into the life of one of Africa's most famous women."--Sadiah Qureshi, History Today

"The excellent historical illustrations throughout help the narrative, making the descriptions read like a movie script."--Margaret H. McFadden, Salem Press

"Crais and Scully . . . point us in the direction of more nuanced studies of the relationship between exploitation, complicity and negotiation, and of the relationship between individual lives and the larger social, political and economic landscape in which they are lived. This is an excellent and provocative study that invites debate."--Shireen Hassim, Labor Bulletin

"The great strength of this book is its readability with vivid, even poetic, descriptions of everything from the African landscape and urban community to the theater district of London."--Martin S. Staum, Journal of Modern History

"Crais and Scully have crafted an admirable book--informative, thought-provoking, and a pleasure to read."--Stacey Hynd, Journal of the Historical Association

This is an extremely well-written and evocative book based on research in five countries conducted over a number of years by two eminent scholars of African history. It sheds light on not only on one woman's life, but on all sorts of fascinating intellectual questions, including how one should read biography, how to write biography, problems with access to archives, etc. In addition, it also encourages its readers to think very seriously about the big questions -'Enligtenment' questions, if you will - about identity, nations, science, the novel, display and story-telling at its finest. I recommend this book to all intelligent readers. It should reach a very wide audience. READ THIS BOOK FOR YOURSELF!

Exciting Story Provides New and Unique View on A Complicated History
By Andrew S. Fleming
The story of Sara Baartman is at first seen as quite a cut-and-dry story, involving the exploitation and restraint over a southern African woman around the turn of the 19th century, showcased around Europe as a specimen of the "lower" forms of human kind at the tip of Africa, and touted as the possible link between humans and other animals by scientists. Her life has been used in many contexts since her death, and has most recently stood in the limelight, upon her return to South Africa from Parisian museums, as a glaring symbol of the colonial oppression associated with the late 18th and 19th centuries. What Crais and Scully vividly portray, however, is that Sara Baartman's history is anything but a cut-and-dry account. By extensively surveying primary and secondary sources from across the world, Crais and Scully not only explain the life of Sara Baartman, but also take the reader on a side-by-side voyage with Sara as she went from the rural areas of South Africa to the growing colonial outpost of Cape Town, and then all the way to the metropoles of London and Paris. The book drives home the point the interpretive values held within the field of history, as well as the frequent lack of self-power and choice given posthumously to historical figures. By empowering Sara Baartman, and returning her voice to her after centuries of only others speaking on her behalf, Crais and Scully guide the reader through a questioning of otherwise-assumed historical fact and exploration of the different themes underlying a very prominent character in world history.

This book serves as a wonderful insight into the topics of world history, scientific research, and gender studies. The writing style and storyline superbly captures the continued attention and fascination of the reader, and offers a welcomed change to a field typically inundated with dry, solely analytical role. Crais and Scully's book actively energises the life of Sara Baartman and her role in it, and takes the reader on a trip around a world of the not-so-distant past.
