In the year 1000, the economy of the Middle East was at least as advanced as that of Europe. But by 1800, the region had fallen dramatically behind--in living standards, technology, and economic institutions. In short, the Middle East had failed to modernize economically as the West surged ahead. What caused this long divergence? And why does the Middle East remain drastically underdeveloped compared to the West? In The Long Divergence, one of the world's leading experts on Islamic economic institutions and the economy of the Middle East provides a new answer to these long-debated questions.

Timur Kuran argues that what slowed the economic development of the Middle East was not colonialism or geography, still less Muslim attitudes or some incompatibility between Islam and capitalism. Rather, starting around the tenth century, Islamic legal institutions, which had benefitted the Middle Eastern economy in the early centuries of Islam, began to act as a drag on development by slowing or blocking the emergence of central features of modern economic life--including private capital accumulation, corporations, large-scale production, and impersonal exchange. By the nineteenth century, modern economic institutions began to be transplanted to the Middle East, but its economy has not caught up. And there is no quick fix today. Low trust, rampant corruption, and weak civil societies--all characteristic of the region's economies today and all legacies of its economic history--will take generations to overcome.

Kuran (Islam and Mammon), a Duke University professor of economics and political science, continues his exploration of Islam and economics in a dense volume that debunks the most common apologies for the economic plight of the Middle East, such as colonization, or the economic importance of the annual hajj pilgrimage. Kuran argues instead that the failure of Middle Eastern economics is not due to Islam itself, but to the fact that Muslims failed to reinterpret previously successful economic concepts at the onset of the Middle Ages, while the West went on to create the corporation (see InProfile in this issue). Muslims may demur, but Kuran points out that many have abandoned some Qur'anic economic practices they disagree with, including the ban on interest, and, more progressively, they have updated and refreshed the tax code described in the Qur'an. Excellent Comparison of the Development of Islamic and European Economic Law

I have read many books on Islam. I read them to understand why Islam conquered so much so quickly, and why it failed both politically and economically over the last 500 years. The relative economic decline is of interest because around 1000 CE, the Muslim world was as wealthy as Europe. This is the first book that provided understanding that I could use. Not on conquest directly, but on the economics.

In "The Long Divergence", the author emphasizes two themes around Muslim law of inheritance. Islamic law mandated distribution of wealth after death amongst multiple heirs. This mandate had two results. First, it forced partnerships to be short lived: Death followed by demands for their part of the inheritance by heirs required liquidation of a partnership. Knowing that any death would end the partnership, Muslims tended to favor two person partnerships of short duration. In contrast, after 1000 CE Europeans developed forms of partnership and corporations that could survive the death of a single participant. Partly this was adoption of primogeniture, under which a single descendant could inherit the whole on one person's assets in a property, business or partnership. At the same time Europeans were becoming innovative about the types of business arrangements used to accumulate wealth. Something like modern corporations developed to manage guilds, monasteries, and even cities. European rulers, desperate for money, and often only weakly in power, were willing to allow independent groups take local power, in exchange for stability and the right to tax revenues or profits. These independent institutions were allowed to change their internal rules and general goals as circumstances changes.

The second theme in "The Long Divergence" explaining relative Islamic economic decline is Islam's failure to develop anything like the European corporation. Again this relates to Muslim inheritance law. The Waqf, the only way Muslims could create an enterprise that could outlive the founder had to be established for only one purpose and that purpose could never change. So, for example, a Waqf to establish a caravan station could never become anything else, even if trade routes or means of transportation changed. Meanwhile, as mentioned in the last paragraph above, European corporations could adapt to changing circumstances to redirect investment in the more productive ways as circumstances changed.

There is much more in this book. I think the author has discovered something about the role of law in economic development that explains a lot about the relative decline of the Islamic world relative to Europe.

There is one other benefit I got from reading "The Long Divergence". The author argues that the codification of rules of inheritance in Islam provided economic laws that were superior to alternatives available in much of the world at the time of the early Muslim conquests. Although he does not argue that this caused the rise of Islam, it suggests one reason for its early success.

Also noted in the book, is that the separation between Church and State in Europe helped lead to innovation in Europe and stagnation in the Islamic world. This made me remember independently that existence of canon law, which the Catholic Church created to govern its internal ecclesiastical affairs, independent of the laws of the political entities in which it served the religious needs of Europeans. Canon law still exists and is still used by the Church to settle issues pertaining to the Church alone. (These include discipline of clergy, alteration of church property, etc.) Many protestant religions have their own versions of cannon law.

Another thing: From this book I learned that Shia and Sunni Muslims have slightly different inheritance laws. I did not know that despite much reading on Islam.

The book made is entertaing, and made me think. Not too much more to ask for in a book on a potentially boring subject!

An excellent technical review of complex phenomena

When in law school, I studied Islamic legal theory. I wish this book had existed then. But even for a lay reader who is interested in social development and asks why the Islamic world seems not to have been able to develop a modern commercial society, this book will provide insight into why.

This is not an easy book. It presumes some knowledge of Islamic thought and of Islamic belief, as well as more generally of the history of the region from about 1400 to about 1900. Okay, fine, you weren't going to buy this if you're scared of the big words, but still be ready. I put it aside a few times and came back to it. But I always came back to it.

Kuran is an excellent writer and his prose is clear. His conclusions may not be indisputable, but they are well-drawn from his premises and they are highly plausible. They are also derived from data. He has gone through not just previous writers but also historical archives to get primary source data to back up his thoughts and analysis. This isn't Niall Ferguson - you don't have to wade through pages of tables and statistics - but it's clear that if Kuran had wanted to write that book he could have.

The other review of this book (at time of my posting there was only the one) has gone into great depth on the discussion of the rules of inheritance, and I won't repeat. I'll focus instead on one element that suggests to me that Kuran is onto something: his explanation for why Islamic societies continued to allow choice of law to religious minorities even after it was clear that they were benefiting from this, while denying it to Muslims who therefore couldn't have benefited. In an oversimplified nutshell, Kuran suggests that it's related to various societal factors all of which were intended to benefit Muslims and that this was an unintended side effect, and that foreign governments which were becoming more dominant in the world capitalized on their local co-religionists in order to extend their reach into the Muslim world. You may agree, you may not, but the argument is well-made.

But his most important argument is this: there is nothing innately anti-Islamic about modern capitalist structures, and the fact that Islamic countries haven't adopted them is a historical artefact and not an innate impossibility. As I was reading this, the revolution in Tunisia had just ended, Egypt was just ending, and Bahrain/Yemen/Algeria/Iran/Libya were ongoing. It will be interesting to see, if any of these countries decides to bring themselves into the modern commercial era, whether Kuran is right.

"The Long Divergence's" author, Timur Kuran, argues that the explanation lies not in geography or Muslim attitudes; instead it was Islamic legal institutions that slowed private capital accumulation, corporations, and large-scale production. Low trust, rampant corruption, and weak civil institutions have followed, and will take generations to overcome.

A good place to start is with the lack of corporate structure in early Islam. The first mostly Muslim-owned joint stock company came in 1851; further delaying Muslim corporations was the lack of a mechanism for trading shares, forcing shareholders to give up liquidity. 'Tax farmers' (those who paid rulers for the right to collect and keep taxes) might have evolved into corporations, but the rulers developed a bad habit of revoking the agreements.

The alternative to corporations, traditional Islamic partnerships, dissolved upon the death, withdrawal, incapacitation of any single member.

Estates, in turn, were divided according to Islamic inheritance rules. The intent was to spread wealth, strengthen families, benefit wives and daughters, and promote political stability. Muslim inheritance practices are embodied in the Koran, and had to modify.

Until modern times, Middle Eastern cities lacked corporate status. Kuran did point out that the early Muslim alternative to incorporated towns providing service was the 'waqf.' The waqf was perpetual, controlled by the founder per his directions, and could provide drinking water, pavement, travelers assistance (especially to those making a pilgrimage to Mecca), even colleges and madrases. Since the colleges were also constrained by the founders' directives, over time they evolved little and became intellectual backwaters. Regardless, these partially successful alternatives to incorporation reduced pressure to develop the corporate mode, and along with it the accounting and legal framework needed in support.

Non-Muslim subjects of Islamic states had to follow Islamic law only in matters of taxation and security - they were free to do business under the rules of their home jurisdiction. A frequent complaint was that Islamic courts were biased against Muslims (and vice-versa in Europe). Non-Muslims were prohibited from testifying against Muslims. Judges lacked training in commercial law, and the proceedings relied heavily on oral evidence (concerned over forgery, misreading of the contents Muslim illiterates, about 95% of the population). Litigants could hire witnesses.

Many mistakenly believe that Muslim law precluded charging interest. Kuran says this isn't true - it only prohibits 'riba,' the Arabian practice whereby a borrower's debt id doubled if not paid on time. This practice often resulted in the confiscation of the borrower's assets, even enslavement.

Overall, "The Long Divergence" is difficult reading, but worth the effort.

A 400-page memoir from the Quiet Beatle? Can it be? Well, yes and no: only about 60 pages of this earnest tome, originally published in 1980, are devoted to Harrison's recollections of life before, during and (notably) after the Beatles. His memories, which manage to feel fresh and distant at the same time, come to readers via transcripts of his conversations with Derek Taylor (1932-1997), the Beatles press officer and ghostwriter of Brian Epstein's memoir. Harrison (1943-2001) was only in his late 30s when I Me Mine came out-the Beatles had formed, changed music forever and disbanded before his 28th birthday. The rest of this volume consists of photos with whimsical captions ("the author enjoying a cheese sandwich with some friends" is assigned to a picture of Harrison with a sitar) and facsimiles of his handwritten lyrics (including a fairly different version of "Taxman"), each accompanied by a brief explanation (ideas expressed in "It's All Too Much," for example, were inspired by LSD and "confirmed in meditation"). Most of the songs were composed after Harrison's immersion in Hinduism; divorced from their melodies, lyrics espousing love, peace and harmony tend to take on a certain sameness. This volume offers much to Beatles zealots, but for the casual fan, Harrison will likely remain as admirable and as inscrutable as ever. B&w photos and illustrations throughout.

Originally released in 1980, this volume includes some very casual recollections by "the quiet one" about his life, including his Liverpool childhood and interest in music, meeting the other kids who would become the 20th century's most influential band, his fascination with Eastern religions, and more. The book features roughly 50 photos taken throughout his life, but the meat of the book is the more than 80 song lyricsDmany of which are reproductions of his hand-written sheets with corrections intactDalong with background on each. There is also a new introduction by Harrison's widow. For millions of diehard fans, there is no such thing as too much information on the Beatles, so this should circulate well.

'I, ME, MINE' is a tasteful, expanded reprint of the closest thing to a George Harrison autobiography.' TIME OUT (4 11 Dec). The DAILY EXPRESS has also given the book a mention. 'If sales of THE BEATLES ANTHOLOGY are anything to go by, public demand for new Beatles product is as strong as ever. While, I, ME, MINE is not strictly speaking a new book, such is its rarity, except at Beatles memorabilia fairs (at vastly inflated prices) that is 400 pages and 200 illustration will be treated asa newly discovered treasure trove of insider detail about the biggest band in pop history.' Barry Forshaw PUBLISHING NEWS 9/8/02 Olivia Harrison is not doing any interviews apart from an American chat show (although there has been a lot of interest from the national press) and we do not have serial rights, so we are concentrating on reviews for I, ME, MINE. Capitol Records released 2 versions of George Harrison's last studio album, "Brainwashed", on 19/11. The memorial concert at the Royal Albert Hall has been covered in HELLO and some nationals.

A Real Gem

Be warned that this is not an autobiography in its entirety. However, it contains the most true biographical content you will find in print about George Harrison. This book is made up of three parts. The first is a short biographical section written by George himself, and by a man by the name of Derek Taylor, a very close friend of George's. While that section is far shorter than any curious fan of George's would like, it is none the less very entertaining, and funny. A true "Must Read", if you will. The second section is the words to nearly all of his songs that were written prior to 1980, when the book first came out. Along with the words are a comment from George about each song. Many of the comments are quite amusing and insightful. The third section is made up of photographs. This edition also comes with an introduction to the writing of this book by George's wife, Olivia, that is truely endearing. If you want to begin to get an idea of George Harrison's sense of humor and personal views on a wide variety of subjects, and if you just plain love George Harrison, GET THIS BOOK! Amen.

I WANT TO TELL YOU

As an inveterate Beatles' fan, it comes as no surprise that I would heartily endorse this book. Long dubbed the Quiet Beatle and other similar cliches, George Harrison does indeed offer his voice and reflections in this work. Always a private man, George's wordings here can be described as almost cryptic.
This work provides readers with a "glimpse" of George growing up; the former Beatle describes his working class roots in Liverpool, his musical muse and later, his work as a gifted composer, guitarist and lyricist. Indeed, George Harrison has expanded musical horizons; in 1965 he became enamored of the sitar and included it on several songs on "Rubber Soul" and later collections.
His lifelong quest for spiritual knowledge and core belief system are explored; indeed, it is in his own words he explains that he does not follow an "organized" or "traditional" religion, but rather bases his spiritual feelings around his internal beliefs.
I like the input the artist's wife Olivia offered; her words are a welcome and added treat to this work. Indeed, it is Olivia's contribution that make the reissue of this work even better and more effective in touching readers.

Check out Guitar George, he knew all the chords

It has never been acceptable merely to be passionate about The Beatles collectively: You MUST have a personal favorite. John Lennon was always mine, by dint of his court jester persona and his wordsmithing, with George Harrison a close second. Being shy myself, I identified with the so-called Quiet Beatle and liked his scornful "don't bother me" attitude, which was integral to so many of his songs. Harrison's meticulous and versatile guitar work, never show-offish and always tasteful, was my main inspiration for wanting to learn to play, too. The Beatle least comfortable with his immortality, Harrison could be openly contemptuous of Beatlemania and often referred to himself ruefully as Beatle George, a title he felt he could never live down. Off-putting to some, maybe, his cantankerousness only made Harrison more interesting to me.
Predictably, Harrison takes a larkish approach to telling his life story. In his foreword, he facetiously calls "I Me Mine" (named after a forgettable tune from "Let It Be") "a little ego detour," but the book's tone is actually rather self-effacing. It's not an autobiography per se, although there is a six chapter text section that hits the high points of Harrison's life up until that time (late Seventies) and allows the mystical Beatle to rhapsodize on some of his passions: spirituality, gardening and, surprisingly, Formula One motor racing. Written by Harrison in a conversational style, with extensive "notes" by longtime Beatles confidant/press officer Derek Taylor, the text is a rambling sketch of a very private man determined to stay that way. (A clue to Harrison's reticence is found in the book's "backword," where he includes the cryptic quote, "Tell not all that you know because he who tells all that he knows, often tells more than he knows.") Luckily for his admirers, Harrison would more forthcoming, particularly on Beatle matters, in "The Beatles Anthology".
The photo section (48 black and white plates) is extraordinary, with lots of unique snaps that haven't seen print before in countless other Beatle books. Two of my favorites: a box of Good News chocolates, the inspiration for Harrison's "Savoy Truffle" from "The White Album," and a cancelled check for one million pounds paid to Inland Revenue, which the notorious taxman-baiter calls "punishment for being cheeky and making lots of money."
The bulk of the book is devoted to examining Harrison's songs, beginning with "Don't Bother Me" from "Meet the Beatles" (1964) through "Blow Away" from the excellent "George Harrison" LP (1979). For each song, Harrison provides a brief (usually) insight into his inspiration and shares his original, handwritten lyric sheets, replete with notes and illustrations. While words were never really Harrison's forte, it's still fascinating to glimpse a Beatle's creative process in such detail. The book includes the final versions of Harrison's songs as they were recorded, and it's interesting to compare them to the working models. "Taxman," in particular, was very rough indeed until Lennon offered Harrison the use of his acid pen - a fact Harrison curiously fails to mention here.
TRIVIA NOTE: The book's first edition was a signed, limited edition of 2,000 numbered copies, hand-bound in leather, by Genesis Publications, Ltd., Guildford, Surrey, England. My humble copy of "I Me Mine" is a 1980 Simon and Schuster edition, a birthday present from my sister (George was her favorite Beatle) in 1983.

Captivating, Complex and Intricately detailed, you will want to color every single picture in this book! Printed one per page!

Filled with Captivating, Complex and Intricately detailed Paisley Patterns, Circular Mandalas, Flowers and a even few Animals, plus 3 girls in graceful yoga poses, as well as a goddess, all are adorned in elaborate designs and patterns inspired by the ancient Mehndi (henna tattoo) patterns of Africa, India, and the Middle East. You will want to color every single picture in this book!

When my mind is racing and stress fills my being, I grab my Colored pencils, Ultra Fine Markers or Gel Pens and this book; I spend a few minutes adding color to these gorgeous patterns and almost immediately the stress is replaced with calm and tranquility. Coloring brings Harmony to my world.

1. This little square book (8 1/2x8 ½ inches) has 48 illustrations printed one per page (the back of each page is blank) printed on medium weight, bright white paper.

2. This book easily lies flat for coloring and the Illustrations are all bordered leaving ½ inch between the border and the binding for ease in coloring the whole illustration.

3. All Markers and some Gel pens leak through this paper, I place a piece of paper under the picture I am coloring to prevent damage to the next picture.

4. Pentel Color Pen, Fine point markers do not work well with this coloring book, the markers act like a fine sand paper (I have seen this in other coloring books with Pentel also) and heavy coloring actually puts a hole in the page.

5. The Illustrations are complex and intricately detailed, some with tiny details, most with small details and a couple with medium details , so Colored Pencils, Gel Pens, or Ultra Fine markers work well in this coloring book.

6. The Illustrations include: 14 Circular Mandalas, 13 Paisley Designs, 4 girls in yoga poses covered with henna tattoos, 4 animals which include 2 Elephants, an Owl, Butterfly, and a Crab all adorned in designs, Plus 13 other miscellaneous patterns including henna inspired flower patterns.

Lovely Coloring Book with a Variety of Designs

- Neat paper
- Not as pix-elated as similar
- Some great designs
- Nice Variety

Cons:
- Some may be too detailed for me

So I got this around the same time I got a lot of other coloring books. What really sold this for me were some of the beautiful pictures of women/dancers. There are several great designs in here but there are a few that may not be for me. Some seem too detailed for the kind of median I work with. That being said there is a huge variety of images to select from.

Watercolor:
Use very small amounts of water and it's possible. Obviously this is not made for watercolor but it's possible. I used very light amounts and allowed time to dry after a few colors. I would leave a page below and above and close the book to keep the paper from wrinkling.

Marker:
If you plan to use marker on some of the designs keep at least two pages under the page you are working on. The marker will bleed and you will clearly see the design on the back but it's kind of fun.

Colored Pencil:
The obvious choice of median. I don't use pens like others but I do use color pencil and it worked well. I was not able to do some of the smallest details but I was happy with the way my design turned out and the pencil was very vibrant on it.

Photo of the book shows it compared to my sketchbook that is 11" x 14". The butterfly photo is with watercolor. The full color one is with colored pencil.

Arguably one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all-time, Michaels offers readers an intimate look at his transformation from a self-destructive, drug-addled superstar to a devoted father, husband, and born again Christian. Michaels wrote about his career up to 2002 in his first book, Heartbreak and amp; Triumph (2005), and here he focuses on how he incorporated his faith into the dazzling and strange world of pro wrestling, including his role as a mentor to young wrestlers and his relationship with WWE CEO Vince McMahon. Each chapter leads with a short Bible passage, and as his story moves from wrestling to his retirement in 2010, he provides faith-based advice on subjects such as tithing, self-awareness, and selfdiscipline. Still, the book is not overly preachy and is told with self-deprecating humor and candor. Michaels, who currently hosts a hunting show on the Outdoor Channel called MacMillan River Adventure, has appeal across multiple demographic categories, and this slim volume has something for all of them. About the Author

In 2010, Shawn Michaels retired from the WWE after a successful run of over twenty years in the ring. A native of San Antonio, TX, Shawn officially became a part of the WWF (now the WWE) in 1988. An eleven-time winner of Pro Wrestling Illustrated and WWE’s Match of the Year Award, Michaels has been blessed enough to be the WWE World Champion, World Heavyweight Champion, Royal Rumble winner (twice), Intercontinental Champion, World Tag Team Champion along with many other noteworthy accolades. He also has compiled list of memorable nicknames that fans across the world associate with his career in the WWE, including: The Heartbreak Kid, The Showstopper, The Headliner, The Main Event, The Icon and Mr. Wrestlemania.

In addition to his wrestling career, Shawn continues his work in the area of Christian ministry working with various churches, charities and organizations which allow him the opportunity to the spread and advance of the gospel. Since his retirement from the WWE, Shawn has turned his focus toward spending more time with his wife and kids, while hosting Shawn Michaels MacMillan River Adventures television show on the Outdoor Channel. Shawn currently lives on his ranch in west Texas with his wife Rebecca and their two children, Cameron and Cheyenne.

When I was 9 years old, my first exposure to wrestling was watching the 1995 Royal Rumble where Shawn Michaels won the Rumble match even though he was the Number 1 entrant. Ever since, Shawn Michaels has been my favorite wrestler.

I found this book to provide good insight into a man who hit a low-point in his life, and the ways he came around to overcoming the obstacles to his happiness. The only complaint I would have about the book was that it was quite short, and there were many parts where he just glossed over some topics without going into more detail about them.

Regardless, this book isn't primarily one about wrestling. It's more about a story of how one's priorities in life change, and just one example of how one comes to their own happiness.

I would like to comment on an earlier review where a person said that liberal Non-Believers should not read this book. I am an agnostic who leans heavily towards atheism, and yet, I still found great value in reading this book. Just because I don't share the Christian faith, that does not mean I cannot appreciate a story of the journey a man went through to go from being a drug-addicted, deeply unhappy person who just lived for themselves to a sober, happy man who lives primarily for his family and faith. Everyone has their own journey to happiness, and we as humans should celebrate our diversity. Even if you are not Christian, one can appreciate and value the ideas expressed by Shawn Michaels: the importance of family, the importance of not having one's happiness be exclusively determined by what one does for a living and the ability for people to dramatically change their lives around. These are not ideas exclusive to Christianity, but are shared by people of all beliefs. And although Shawn Michaels talks about these things through the lens of Christianity, that does not make them irrelevant to non-Christians.

Amazing to hear about the transformation of Shawn Michaels first hand

Shawn Michaels and Undertaker have always been my 2 favorite wrestler it was awesome for Shawn to take us into a different part of his life and inspiring how much he's changed. I always thought he'd be just as cool outside the squared circle because I didn't start watching him wrestle until his comeback in 2002 until I heard wrestlers in interviews talking about how much of a prick he was in the 90s. Although I felt like at times a lot of the same things and points were repeated and sometimes it seemed like you were writing stuff just to fill more pages and the word God is in the book about 10,000 times and felt like the only word used at times I still thank you for writing this book Shawn you inspired me to get more serious about being a Catholic and because of it I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulder

I have lived a life of sin and this book makes me want to be a better man, husband and father

I have been a wrestling fan since I was 8 years old. Now 35 with a family of my own, I read this book because it was written by Shawn Michaels. I can say I was presently surprised by how inspired I am. I have lived a life of sin and this book makes me want to be a better man, husband and father. I finished the book in less than 4 hours. Not once does Shawn preach forcefully or make anyone believe that his way is the right way. He shares his witness and his relationship with God, in hopes that it will touch at least one person's life. I can say it touch mined and starting today, I hope I can be half the changed man that Shawn has become. I hope my faith and relationship with God will carry me through the rest of my life. I know it will not be easy but with God's help I will make it.

Paul Davidovits, Professor of Chemistry at Boston College, was co-awarded the prestigious R.W. Wood prize from the Optical Society of America for his seminal work in optics. His contribution was foundational in the field of confocal microscopy, which allows engineers and biologists to produce optical sections through 3D objects such as semiconductor circuits, living tissues, or a single cell. Dr. Davidovits earned his doctorate, masters, and undergraduate degrees from Columbia University. Prior to his appointment at Boston College, he was a faculty member at Yale University. He has published more than 150 papers in physical chemistry and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of the American Association for Advancement of Science. The second edition of Physics in Biology and Medicine received the Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award in the Discipline of the Natural Sciences.

PHYSICS IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE, by Professor Paul Davidovits, is an expository masterpiece of admirable didactic value, which has gained additional attractiveness through the myriad of improvements made in the third edition. Reading PHYSICS IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE, Third Edition,I have been thoroughly impressed by Professor Davidovits scholarly depth and persuasive sincerity. Moreover, his uncanny ability to communicate difficult concepts in surprisingly accessible and yet technically accurate language is certainly rare. The book reviewed here can be profitably employed as a faithful companion to the regular text adopted by any instructor, for a one-year course of general physics to biology and premed students.
