Superb and Fascinating

This is my personal favourite of the five COLLECTED ESSAYS volumes from Hippocampus Press. Everything in its eclectic is of intense interest to students of Lovecraft's life and art. A biographer and student of Lovecraft's philosophy, such as S. T. Joshi, may have preference for the first section, which is indeed devoted to essays expressing Lovecraft's ideas on a variety of subjects. It is the second section, Autobiography and Miscellany, that captures my keen attention, and I have returned to these entries again and again, for entertainment and inspiration. Of particular interest is "In Memoriam: Henry St. Clair Whitehead," as so little is known about the life of this excellent weird writer; & we also find ourselves caught in the reflections of E'ch-Pi-El as he considers the career of Robert Ervin Howard. The complete Commonplace Book is here, that fascinating record of ideas for stories that assisted Lovecraft in the writing of his excellent weird fiction, and that continues to inspire leagues of Lovecraftian authors to the present time. "Notes on Stories," too, is of intense interest, and I list here the entire contents of that section:

The book on the table was never a best seller. Collected in this volume is a series of (out of date) philosophical essays, ranging from topics such as supernatural horror in literature to alcohol prohibition. There is a very curious chapter where a collection of plot devices that have yet to be used, or have already been used, are described. Along with the commonplace book which can be found in Literary criticism within the same series, there are some potential gems to be found here. Fan fiction writters take note!

About the Author

Andrew Leyshon, Professor of Economic Geography, University of Nottingham

Andrew Leyshon is Professor of Economic Geography and Head of the School of Geography (2011-2015), University of Nottingham. He has authored and edited several books and published over 100 academic papers and chapters. He was Editor-in-Chief of Geoforum between 1995-2006, has presented over 90 conference papers and seminars, been a Principal Investigator on six major Economic and Social Research Council grants. He was, until 2012, Deputy Director of the Financial Services Research Forum at Nottingham University Business School. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Environment and Planning A, and of the Editorial Advisory Board of Economy and Society. In 2007 he was elected as an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences and he is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of British Geographers.

Stylish arrangements of classics with a few surprises

Dan Coates arrangements, as usual, are just compicated enough to sound great, but playable enough for most pianists. The book includes a few unexpected songs like "Celebrate Me Home" and "Zat you, Santa Claus ?" as well as "Santa Baby." I've taken just this book to parties and it's got more than enough standards to fill up the evening. great addition to my Christmas piano book colllection.

I've been using this book a ton for both piano and guitar.
Most songs are in keys of C, F, or G - so easy to play on piano... but still challenging/full arrangements for a beginner.
My only wish is that it could be spiral bound so that the pages stay open on their own. I must use a clip or two.

About the Author

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.

Renée Graef received her bachelor's degree in art from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She is the illustrator of numerous titles in the Little House publishing program, as well as Rodgers and Hammerstein's My Favorite Things and E.T.A Hoffman's The Nutcracker, adapted by Janet Schulman. She lives in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, with her husband and two children.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

I am the mother of a two year old daughter and was delighted to find the magic of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books captured in a format that is perfect for small children. As a child, I became fascinated with the adventures of Laura, Mary and their baby sister Carrie. Prairie Day is a synopsis of the Little House on the Prairie book. With vivid drawings that have been inspired by the artwork on the original covers by Garth Williams, Renee Graef manages to convey the story in pictures that have captured the imagination of my daughter. I look forward to sharing with her the original books in the future, but meanwhile we will continue to enjoy the series of books that Prairie Day is a part of.

I absolutely love the whole My First Little House series. Beautiful artwork and lovely, simple language that captures the heart and feeling of the original little house books but makes them accessible for younger readers. Just a great series of picture books!

Prairie Day, an adaptation from the Little House on the Prarie classic series, will delight children and peak their interest in Pioneering life. The illustrations capture the attention and imagination of young children, whetting their appetite for more.

This adaptation shows kids that riding accross the prairie in a covered wagon is not all "fun and games." What do pioneering families do when the ride gets a bit "boring?" Take a break, of course! Kids will enjoy learning what kinds of foods pioneering families ate, how they cooked and what they did without hotels while travelling accross America.

While reading the reviews of this book I was struck by a response to the lady who referred to this book as pornography:

Essential for the conoisseur. . .

This is one of the several Legman editions that
swept together a bunch of earlier printed sources
and blended them with a trove of oral tradions.
The one on my desk right now has a 1992 copyright,
but identical volumes are available from the late
1950's.
This one includes a list of sources and variants
and a limerick-slanted rhyming dictionary. If
you've ever wondered what could permissibly happen
to the young man from Saskatchewan, this is for you.
As for the poor fellow named Blaine, well you'll have
to look it up yourself.

As another reviewer has noted, virtually all the five-
line masterpieces in this collection are scurrulous. Except
for a few that are sadistic. Or disgusting. The prospective
reader should be reminded that:

A limerick's a rhyme anatomical
In a form that is most economical
And the good one I've seen
So seldom are clean
And the clean ones never are comical.

No "clean" limericks need apply

I found this book after I had read "Rationale of the Dirty Joke". As a fan of this poetic form, I have scanned many collections of limericks, but his has to be, by far, the most comprehensive. The introduction explains the origin of the limerick, and the following chapters categorize the limericks by topic, such as excrement, zoophily, abuses of the clergy, organs, etc. The Man from Nantucket, Alice and her dynamite stick and Dave the Hermit are present and accounted for, plus some multi-limerick sagas such as the Farter from Sparta. What you will NOT find is the "Lady from Niger", the "Lady from Guam", and the clean "Man from Nantucket". I have seen a shorter, less complete book attributed to G. Legman. Don't bother with that one- this is the book to have.
