About the Author
Daniel M. Shea is Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Political Participation at Allegheny College. He is the author of several books on American politics, including TRANSFORMING DEMOCRACY: LEGISLATIVE CAMPAIGNS AND POLITICAL PARTIES (1995), CAMPAIGN MODE: THE STRATEGY TACTICS AND ART OF POLITICAL CAMPAIGN MANAGEMENT (1996 AND 2001), CAMPAIGN MODE: STRATEGY AND LEADERSHIP IN CONGRESSIONAL ELECTIONS (with Michael John Burton, 2002). Shea has edited numerous other books dealing with parties, elections, Congress, and the politics of the media, and has written articles for a number of journals. He lives in Meadville, PA with his wife Christine Gatto-Shea and three children.

Christopher E. Smith is Professor of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University (MSU). He earned degrees at Harvard University, the University of Bristol (England), the University of Tennessee, and the University of Connecticut. Trained as a lawyer and social scientist, he is the author of 25 books and more than 100 scholarly articles on law, courts, and criminal justice policy. He has been recognized as an outstanding teacher with MSU's "Teacher-Scholar Award" and "Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award." His other books with Cengage Learning/Wadsworth include CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AMERICA, Eighth Edition (with George Cole and Christina DeJong), LAW AND CONTEMPORARY CORRECTIONS, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS: MYTHS AND REALITIES, and CRIMINAL PROCEDURE.

About the Author

Gordon Fisher

Gordon Fisher got his start in computer graphics, working with industry pioneers at Information International, Inc. Since then, he has made 3D animation for clients including the U.S. Army, Ford Motor Co., the Dallas Cowboys, the Southeastern Conference, Costco, and Southwest Airlines. He has been using Blender professionally since 2002, and has given classes on using Blender and using Python with Blender at Python conferences in Texas and Arkansas. His short film, Land and Sky, made with Blender, was shown at the Ozark Foothills Film Fest. His work has been displayed at the National Air and Space Museum. He is the Creative Director for Point Happy Interactive and spends his spare time as a bicycling advocate and space activist. He has written articles about 3D modeling and animation for the American Modeler magazine and Digital Video Producer e-zine.

Be prepared for much hard work and frustration

OK. I read the other reviews, and they sound like glowing endorsements. Allow me to offer a more sober view, from the perspective of a complete novice to Blender, but someone who did pick up a minor in computer science during his doctoral program, that involved several programming classes, along with linear algebra and a math-oriented computer graphics course.

First, Blender itself is mind-bogglingly complex. It's almost unfathomable how complicated this program is. It's far and away the most complex program I've ever tried to use, and I've used Mathematica for 20 years and Visual Studio for several. Any given object you create can literally have hundreds of attributes, each of which can, itself, have dozens to hundreds of individual sub-attributes and settings. Moreover, almost none of these attributes and settings will seem intuitively obvious to a beginner. So, trying to get launched with even a simple project feels like slogging through an endless swamp.

As far as this particular book is concerned, chapters 1-5 aren't too bad, although you HAVE to go slowly, step-by-step, and you HAVE to download the examples package from the publisher's Web site, or you'll be completely lost.. Even so, chapter 6 is pretty much a nightmare, particularly from p. 192 on (that's as far as I've gotten so far). The text instructions are sketchy, important figures that could help you figure out what's going on are absent, and you're asked to perform tasks whose underlying logic is complex, but largely unexplained. Moreover, the author insists on exclusively using hotkeys (rather than the pulldown menu). And, there are scores and scores of hotkey combinations--easy to confuse and forget. After about the 40th combination, my head was literally reeling. IMHO, pulldown menues help mentally organize features & hotkeys can be learned later. But, that's just me, so take it for whatever you think it's worth.

Finally, purchase of this particular book, even after mastered, won't make you a Blender expert. That's entirely obvious, even halfway through the book. For the average person, mastering Blender will be the hardest single thing they've done in their life.

Put it this way: Learning Blender, for me, is exactly like going back to the very hardest parts of graduate school I ever had to endure. It requires creating a mental landscape inside yourself, composed of many, many concepts, all interconnected. It requires having to endure tutorials that often don't make sense, and having to figure things out on your own, up to and including the point at which you finally have to give up on the occasional lesson and simply try to move on. And, unless you're equipped with nearly limitless patience, and are prepared to swallow that entire lake of knowledge, learning just a little bit of it is probably not going to seem anything but frustrating.

I realize that this may be the only review you read that isn't glowing and simplistic. But, at least you'll know it was written by a real person, and, certainly, nobody who may have been paid to make Blender sound like a piece of cake.

An EXCELLENT Book For Blender Beginners!

I have been a “student” of Blender for 6+ years. I say student, because I have never been able to master the basics. I have watched videos of very knowledgeable folks presenting blender lessons and examples and have always managed to pick up a nugget or two, but I was always frustrated that these presentations seemed to presuppose a certain level of understanding – particular regarding navigating the controls.

Oh that I had had this book years ago! In my estimation, this is the ideal book for Blender beginners. There are no assumptions of knowledge and the reader is taken a step at a time to the point that he or she is very ably “Blender-conversant” by the end of the book. This book would have saved me hours of frustration, stops and starts. It is simplifying a great number of things that I still have trouble with even after trying to 'self-learn' for several years.

For those who have been wanting to learn Blender but found it too intimidating, here is the place to start. Even if you have already started learning Blender, this is a great way to fill in the gaps and supplement your learning.

This is the tome I've been looking for. It has an informal, take you by the hand and ease you in approach that'll help you get to know Blender's distinctive interface and get up to speed as quickly as possible. In addition, it's structured much like an actual class you might attend, with sections after each exercise that explain further "What Just Happened" as well as giving a short quiz after each section to help you retain what you've learned. Short of having an actual teacher living with you, I found this book to be an excellent way to ease into the more advance online videos and other tutes by giving you a solid background to build on. Originally I borrowed this book from the university library, thinking that I could read it and return it. After spending several evenings reading and reviewing the concepts and diagrams in book, I decided to purchase it, deciding that it would make a wonderful addition to my dental library. I was a little bit worried about buying a book that was written over 7 years ago, but many of the concepts and techniques that Dr. Magne discusses still hold true.

The book is divided into 9 chapters:

Chapter 1 - Understanding the intact tooth and the biomimetic principle.
Chapter 2 - Natural Oral Esthetics
Chapter 3 - Ultraconservative Treatment Options
Chapter 4 - Evolution of Indications for Anterior Bonded Porcelain Restorations
Chapter 5 - Initial Treatment Planning and Diagnostic Approach
Chapter 6 - Tooth Preparation, Impression and Provisionalization
Chapter 7 - Laboratory Procedures
Chapter 8 - Try-In and Adhesive Luting Procedures
Chapter 9 - Maintenance and Repairs

The book stresses the biomimetic approach, which I think is more of the swiss school of dentistry. (Making the teeth look realistic and polychromatic.)

The photos in the book are well taken, something to aspire towards. The book is also part of the recommended readings from the American Association of Cosmetic Dentists (AACD). (It also comes in a laminated box, something I didn't expect, but is a nice to have.)

this is a fantastic book. you'll find there pretty much everything you might need about the topic. It has been very carefully thought through too. it is very easy to read, no rubbish, just the practical stuff. The book itself is a piece of art, beautifully printed and finished.

About the Author
Michael G. LaFosse has been an origami artist for decades, and is internationally regarded as a leading authority and master of the art. The author of many books, kits and videos relating to paperfolding and hand papermaking, LaFosse produces fine paper art and commercial designs for a variety of international clients. His work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world, and is currently on display at the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts.

Richard L. Alexander co-founded the Origamido Studio, a teaching center, gallery and design studio in Massachusetts, with Michael G. LaFosse in 1996.

Some repetition of Advanced Origami, but a beautiful book nonetheless

I give this book 4 stars with reservations. Many of the patterns are VERY similar to those in Advanced Origami. However, between the two books, I'd advocate buying this one, so, hence the four stars.

LaFosse's books are unique in that they focus on paper and on wet folding. He empahsizes the art of folding, not intricate folds. His patterns tend to have a fairly low number of steps, but in order to generate the desired final product, a lot of time will be spent finishing.

The repetition starts in the "Techniques" section at the front of the book when he talks about making paper. Identical photographs are used in multiple cases between this book and Advanced Origami.

Entirely new patterns not similar to those found in Advanced Origami include a lobster, a fairly weak monk seal design, a great manatee fold, a cormorant, a great penguin, a modular flower requiring several sheets of paper for an un-extraordinary result, a fairly mundane fighter jet, and an amazing alligator. It's basically worth buying the book just for the alligator. Folds that gave me deja vu included the grackle, whale, butterfly, turtle, and orchid. (Sound familiar?)

Anyway, it certainly seems worth having one of LaFosse's books in your library if you're an origami enthusiast. If I had to choose, I'd pick this one. If the first one totally rocked your world, then you'll want to pick this one as well.

These books are for an intermediate or better folder, in my opinion. Complete beginners will probably find them a bit frustrating.

We purchased this for our grandson who learned some basic origami in school art class and on the internet. The book is large and arrived in beautiful condition. It had an abundance of items and patterns which even basic users could use as well as more advanced patterns. An overall good buy!

Not quite a page-turner, but this book presents good applications of tensor math. Sometimes difficult to follow, the book omits many "assumed" steps. However, a fine escape into the world of absolute differential calculus.

This book constitutes the history of Absolute Differential Calculus, born from the cooperation from Albert Einstein and Tullio Levi Civita. It also keeps an account on what Gregorio Ricci Curbastro had previously estabilished on Tensors. I think it's a wonderful occasion, to study from the original papers of the authors of a theory, though they are generally somehow obscure, with respect to textbooks. Poetic Validation

Reading this collection was like having someone translate my own feelings which were always in a language foreign even to myself. There were moments when I just stopped reading and cried because it was so validating to know there's at least ONE other person on the planet who can relate to the diverse, and often conflicting emotions I feel about love and life. I'm sure I'll read this collection countless more times in my life. Right now, it's my therapy. Thank you, Samantha King.
