Paul Davidovits, Professor of Chemistry at Boston College, was co-awarded the prestigious R.W. Wood prize from the Optical Society of America for his seminal work in optics. His contribution was foundational in the field of confocal microscopy, which allows engineers and biologists to produce optical sections through 3D objects such as semiconductor circuits, living tissues, or a single cell. Dr. Davidovits earned his doctorate, masters, and undergraduate degrees from Columbia University. Prior to his appointment at Boston College, he was a faculty member at Yale University. He has published more than 150 papers in physical chemistry and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of the American Association for Advancement of Science. The second edition of Physics in Biology and Medicine received the Alpha Sigma Nu Book Award in the Discipline of the Natural Sciences.

The standard for field work...clear...BUT get it used

Along with "The Ethnographic Interview", this is a mainstay of field anthropologists and should be read by anyone who wants to gain a true understanding of the issues facing an Anthropologist (social). As an anthropologist working in business I have gone back to this text again and again to refocus and aid in explaining to others what I can, or actually do. "Participant Observation" is often the text which accompanies a fieldwork course and can be found cheaper at any university library (I never thought I would say that!!).

I fear that many people buying this book will be sorely disappointed that it is a very thin paper back addition (for 50+ dollars). The content is good, but the new price still hard to justify. I feel that could tripl sales by dropping to 20-25... I actually found it for 18.95 used.

In conclusion- its a good, if pricey book.

Useful useful book

As an anthro major who has done a lot in the discipline, but never had an explicit text that put all the info and strategies on Participant observation in one place before, I love this book. Nice concise chapters with lots of information, little fluff and truthfully enjoyable to read. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in participant observation. He also guides you through the actions of an ethnography with tasks at the end of each chapter, which I found very helpful.

Great for Participant Observation in Cross-Cultural Settings

A very thorough resource. Spradley will walk the reader step-by-step through the process of participant observation. I think of Spradley as a more narrative guide while Jorgensen is more linear and outline based. Spradley will provide greater depth, appreciation, and understanding of part. obs. but it will take you longer to get there and not be as to the point as Jorgensen.

The fighting that waged across the Philippines during World War II ranks among the most vicious in the annals of war. Nearly 80,000 Americans and Filipinos were taken prisoner on Bataan, the name of which is forever linked with the notorious "death march." During the three years that Japan occupied the archipelago, 130,000 American and Filipinos were killed. Prisoners in Japanese prison camps were 10 times as likely to die in captivity as soldiers held by the Germans. When they returned to retake the islands, American troops preferred not to take any prisoners at all. Gerald Astor gives voice to the soldiers who participated in this gruesome period of world military history.

War's raw brutality pours over the pages of Astor's fourth book (after Operation Iceberg) to chronicle WWII combat by drawing heavily on firsthand accounts of American vets. In examining the Philippines' fall to the Japanese in 1941-1942, the consequent suffering of civilians and American POWs and the U.S. counterattack in 1944, Astor criticizes Douglas MacArthur's judgment in the war's initial stages, defends his decision to counterattack and considers pointless his later extension of operations to the southern islands. Interspersing a lively narrative that provides detailed background with individual perspectives on what happened, Astor introduces the reader to this crucial Pacific campaign from the viewpoint of both the individual soldier and military leaders. He expresses opinions on many topics, such as Douglas MacArthur as a military leader, the American war plan for the Pacific, and Japanese policy toward POWs. Oral histories like this one take on added significance considering that ten years from now, most World War II veterans will no longer be around to give voice to those years when they sacrificed for their country in its time of need. Resiliency -- borne out of necessity defeats evil at it's core.

The author of this historical WWII tribute is Gerald Astor. He effectively weaves 84 oral histories together to form a cogent picture of the peaks and valleys of the war in the Pacific, 1941-1945. In addition to these firsthand accounts are a constellation of testimonials given from various admirals, generals and their staffs that played pivotal roles in defeating the Imperial Japanese Army, (IJA).

The predominate story line focuses on the confluence of events in the Philippines, and it's struggle to rid the country from its IJA invaders. This includes the fight on Bataan, (and its subsequent death march), Corregidor, Zambales Mountains, the Lingayen Gulf landings, (IJA and later MacArthur and company), Leyte, Hell Ships, and about a half dozen of the more notorious prison camps located on Luzon, Mindanao, and Palawan Islands -- all part of the Republic of the Philippines. Also islands mentioned and glossed over are Panay, Cebu, Negros, and Mindoro. So as you can see there's an awful lot to track in this snapshot in time, perhaps too much, hence my 4 star rating.

The hardships endured from mother nature alone included bouts of malaria, dysentery, dengue fever, jungle rot, and other nefarious maladies. Notwithstanding, the Japanese and their cruel, harsh, torturous treatment of their captives illustrate how deprived the human spirit can sink to. The systemic starvation diets alone took its gratuitous toll as well. For example, upon arriving to Camp O'Donnell via the Bataan Death March, there was an estimated 42,000 Filipinos, and 8,675 Americans incarcerated. Within two months 1,500 Americans and 20,000 Filipinos succumbed to death via starvation and its biggest contributors; beriberi, (lack of protein in the diet), and little to no medication to treat the mosquito born diseases listed above. These death rates were ten times higher than experienced at German POW camps. Unconscionable.

All in all, with the maniacal banzai raids and poor leadership of the IJA, the Japanese listed over 300,000 of their troops killed in action while defending their ill gotten gains in the Philippines. On the flipside, 131,028 Filipinos, and Americans died. Most of which were civilians in Manila when that city went through the grinder in 1945... Complements of the land-locked Japanese Navy, (sailors without ships). Staggering numbers. The LtCol of the IJA known as the, "Butcher of Manila", would eventually hang for orchestrating these murderous war crimes.

Standard Oral History of the Battles of the Philippines

Gerald Astor is one of those guys who writes oral history of various World War II battles. This is one of his books, a pretty good one, but since the battle is so complicated things get a little lost.

The Philippines were the setting for a considerable amount of fighting during World War II. The Japanese began their attack on the islands within hours of Pearl Harbor, and invaded within days. When they conquered the last of the islands in the Spring of 1942, they began consolidating their hold on them. Two years later, American forces returned, invading first one island and then another, reconquering much of the archipelago before the Japanese surrendered.

This book chronicles the experiences of American army and army air officers and men during the battle, along with a few sailors. The author provides a brief summary of each action that took place, and then gives you one after another oral account of the fighting that took place, pretty much all of it from the American point of view. There are a very few accounts from civilians (none Filipino) who were present during the fighting. There aren't any accounts from the Japanese side, either. The narratives from the American soldiers and other participants are interesting, but since the overall narrative is so confused, the author has a hard time providing context for what's going on. After a while, the book becomes rather confused, and the whole story bogs down.

I generally find oral histories to be interesting, provided the author works hard to give some context to what's occurring. Here, sadly, the author fails in this regard. The book does provide the oral history itself...but nothing else, really.

Completes this often skipped chapter of WWII

What do you know about the Battle for the Philippines? Like most, you probably know that: 1) The Japanese invaded, 2) There were intense defensive delaying actions fought at Bataan and Corregidor, 3) MacArthur escaped vowing "I shall return!" 4) Captured survivors suffered greatly in their forced march from Bataan, and 5) Later, MacArthur did triumphantly return and everyone lived happily ever after. But there's much more to this battle than all that. Read about how MacArthur altered the defense plan for the archipelago from the original US plan and why he did so. See how the Imperial Japanese Navy almost dealt a blow to the US Naval Task Force. Learn why MacArthur was portrayed in the limelight (it wasn't personal vanity as some might think). But most of all, experience the bitter conflict through the eyes of the men who made it possible, and also paid for it. Astor's work is very readable, informative, and entertaining.

Don't Go See This Play On A First Date

This is not a horrible play, but it is a horrible play to see on a first date. I made that mistake. I saw it back in the 80s off broadway in New York. I scored great tickets, first row. The theater was small and the stage was not set in an arch or elevated.
One of the charactors/props in the play was a live orphaned baby lamb kept in a baby playpen at the front of the stage. The lamb kept licking our fingers during the play and was very cute. So far so good, this first date was going ok. I was scoring points with the girl I was with.
Then the drama started. The family portrayed is disfunctional and under incredible stress. The violence increases and increases. Yelling, fighting--I don't want to spoil things for you, but things don't turn out well for the lamb at the end (for you PETA folks out there--through the use creative F/Xs no living lamb was hurt in the production). End result for me--not a very good first date. It was a better read.

Disguised Gem

Sam Shepard has created a beautiful story of a poor family struggling to keep their home, relationships, and sanity. His amazing symbols keep the reader thinking, and this proves to be a play that is much more than surface deep. I especially enjoyed his themes on class and destiny, as well as his ideas on family and rebirth. For me, this book was amazingly written and intriquingly complex; its tragedies make the reader reevaluate his/ her own life. It made me laugh out loud, but in addition to being funny, it was enlightening, symbolic, provocative.

The blue collar Wild West, a la Sam

I had not read Shepard in many a moon, and it was good to check back into his strange version of America. This was written during his peak period (his recent stuff, most of which I have not read, is not as highly regarded), and like many of his other good ones, it concerns a squabbling family in the Southwest. The title and some of the dialogue indicates that Shepard viewed the travails of this clan as symptomatic of being part of the great white working class - and travails there are: alcoholism, violence, living with poverty breathing down their necks, smart alecky kids, a confused mother, a drunken, headstrong father. Parts of it are absurd and funny, but ultimately this is no comedy.

The play begins with the son Wesley, trying to repair the door his father, Weston, has smashed to bits in a drunken rage. The refrigerator is empty - there is a lot of action concerning the refrigerator and food. This is clearly a family in disarray. Both the parents are trying to sell the house out from under each other. The father is tough and dynamic, but seriously cracked, and much of the play concerns the other characters tiptoeing around and trying to figure out how to handle him. Most of the dialogue is standard American white trashese. There are a couple of monologs which, for me anyway, were not as effective. This was a good one. I would like to see it performed someday. It might be a little difficult though - the script calls for a live lamb.
