I would love to drive these cars

[[VIDEOID:moO67HBCT09TMW]]DRIVE, the latest book from Design Studio Press is a collaborative effort between Scott Robertson and two of his students at the Art Center College of Design: Annis Naeem and Daniel Gardner. It's a great idea to have an art book as a portfolio.

This book is about cool cars and awesome rigs. It's a 176-page hardcover with a very nice cover.

The pages are just loaded with concept sketches, paintings and 3D models. Four basic vehicle types are featured as chapters, namely Aerospace, Military, Pro Sport and Salvage. Within each chapter, you'll see fast cars, off-roaders, juggernaut-type vehicles, a few bikes, and other sleek mean machines. This book is a valuable resource for ideas with its immense variety. There are so many ways you can design chassis, wheels, suspension, exhaust, etc.

The concepts are good looking, inspiring and sometimes surprising -- the first vehicle looked like a frog. Through the multiple thumbnail sketches provided, you can see how the design evolved at different stages until it's finally painted or modeled in 3D.

Speaking of 3D models, they are impressive. And there are lots of them in the book. Tremendous amount of detail are included in the models, before they are textured, lit and finally rendered in a photo-realistic manner. It's amazing to see the vehicle when everything is put together, with all the cuttings, wirings and parts. The result is a vehicle that looks believable and like it has character.

Artist commentary is also available throughout to give a sense of what they have to work with and how they think.

DRIVE is a book I'll recommend to anyone who likes concept vehicles.

Best Of the Bunch

For those who don't know about Scott Robertson, he's a vehicle concept artist for the entertainment industry who's been an instructor at Art Center in Pasadena and Gnomon School of VFX in Hollywood. He's produced countless DVD training video's on the topic of automotive design for Gnomon Workshops aswell as his own imprint.

I've read the reviews and critiques of Scott Robertson's other books and would have to agree with allot of them. This book however seems to have addressed those comments and in my opinion is the best of his releases. It's broken up to cover different types of designs from military vehicles to future racing cars. It includes everything from large full color 3d renderings to greyscale photoshop work, to early concept sketches and iterations of the conceptual process of his vehicular designs. Most of the book is full color, large images taking up the majority of the page or a double page spread. Some of the greyscale concepts might be 2 or 3 to 6 up on a page depending.

Personally, I love cars and vehicle concept art, I find this book to be a continual source of continuing inspiration. After many hours of studying this book, elements of the different vehicles depicted through out this book have begun to seep into my own work. When I'm hung up on a design, I pull out this book to help jumpstart my own imagination or to simply help me find other alternatives to what I'm trying to accomplish.

It's probably one of the few books I never get tired of looking through and it spends more time on my desk or in my bag then on the bookshelf. If your into vehicle designs and concepts this is defiantly something I'd think you'd want to have handy to get the creative juices flowing... seriously, I just can't express amazing I find this book to be.

Good cars, great workflow

Scott Robertson continues his string of hits. His Gnomon instructional DVDs are the best of their kind, and his books are inspirational. While this isn't a "how-to" book, he does discuss his process in a helpful way, notably his integration of 2D and 3D techniques (he used MODO for this book).

If you are interested in Car Design, you are an aspiring transportation design or entertainment design student, or you want to attend Art Center College of Design, this is a must buy.

If you just like wacky cars, the likes of which are only to be found in the movies or limited edition Hot Wheels, you'll probably like this book too.

If you want to learn how to draw the cars, get his "How to Draw Cars the Hot Wheels Way" book. It's more process oriented and for beginners.

We got this book as a gift for our baby and he loved it . Can't blame him the book has 28 colorful pictures ,the animal's name in big font ,and some questions in some pages with extra tiny pictures too. I'll definitely recommend it to my friends

The animals look very strange..

This book has nice bright and bold pictures and the book itself is very durable. However, the drawings of the animals are a bit off.. Who has ever seen a blue, yellow, and red bumble bee? It's almost as if the artist has never seen these animals before.. Thankfully I got this cheaper somewhere else.

Chris Keith is Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity and Director of the Centre for the Social-Scientific Study of the Bible at St. Mary's University College, Twickenham, UK. He is the author of The Pericope Adulterae, the Gospel of John and the Literacy of Jesus, a winner of the 2010 John Templeton Award for Theological Promise, and Jesus' Literacy: Scribal Culture and the Teacher from Galilee. He is also the co-editor of Jesus among Friends and Enemies: A Historical and Literary Introduction to Jesus in the Gospels, and was recently named a 2012 Society of Biblical Literature Regional Scholar.

Groundbreaking - The Traditional Method is Dead

Chris Keith and Anthony Le Donne have put together a forceful collection of essays in Jesus, Criteria, and the Demise of Authenticity. Honestly, this book has the potential to completely reshape the way historical Jesus studies are executed. The historiographical foundation of the Third Quest has been the criteria of authenticity. If one is to engage the sources seriously, then the criteria, it is said, are the scholarly tools for the job. Yet, as Keith and company show, the criteria cannot deliver what they promise.

The volume begins with an introduction by Le Donne articulating the intentions of the assembled scholars. While they are not monolithic in their evaluation of the criteria, they are unified in a general unrest and dissatisfaction with the way the criteria have been used. Thus, the volume is primarily unified in deconstruction while containing considerable variance in prescription for the future of historical Jesus studies. For example, some contributors think the criteria remain a valuable though limited tool, while others call for wholesale abandon of their use. Yet the thesis remains the same, the traditional use of the criteria is untenable.

The next two chapters are by Chris Keith and Jens Schröter. Keith demonstrates the dependence of the criteria upon form-criticism, arguing persuasively that if form-criticism is dead, then so are the criteria. Schröter in turn considers the historiographical methodology that underlies the criteria. As perhaps one the most sophisticated historiographers currently engaged in the Quest, Schröter's voice is especially significant. He demonstrates the bankruptcy of the form-critical approach as a historical methodology and argues in favor of an approach that takes the Gospels seriously as narratives - recognizing the Gospels as a whole as our sources for reconstruction.

The next part of the volume considers the five most prominent of the criteria, in my view, successfully exposing their weaknesses as tools of authentication. Loren Stuckenbruck begins by completely dismantling the criterion of Semitic influence. Anyone wishing to employ Semitisms for authentication will have first have to go through Stuckenbruck - a task I doubt can be accomplished. The second criteria on the chopping block is the criterion of coherence. Anthony Le Donne demonstrates convincingly that coherence is nowhere near an objective tool. The history of its use reveals how intertwined it has been with the subjective pre-understanding of the scholar. Likewise, it leaves no room for inconsistency in historical figures - something that basic experience should guard us against.

Dagmar Winter turns her scope to the criterion of dissimilarity. This is without a doubt the most suspect of the criteria. Nearly every article contributes throws at least a few jabs at dissimilarity, even when that is not their subject. Winter previously coauthored a volume with Gerd Theissen, The Quest for the Plausible Jesus, which completely obliterates dissimilarities worth (see my review). Thus, she is well qualified as the contributor for this article. She successfully summarizes her previous argument and offers a way forward that flips dissimilarity on its head.

Rafael Rodriguez then offers a critique against the criterion of embarrassment. He shows how the criterion falls short of objectivity because it relies on the historian's own portrait of early Christianity (this is rather similar to Winter's critique of dissimilarity). The events that historian's consider embarrassing are only embarrassing when placed in a particular narrative. For example, Jesus' baptism is only embarrassing if it is assumed that he is sinless. However, we can't be confident that all early Christians thought that. In fact, it may actually have bolstered Jesus' authority because it associated him with a famous prophet. Thus, the criterion of embarrassment is unable to deliver of the objectivity that it promises.

Ending the onslaught of the individual criteria is Mark Goodacre. He evaluates the worth of the criterion of multiple of attestation. Goodacre concedes the basic historiographical point that more sources attesting is better than less. However, he is not confident that we are able to identify when we have multiple sources. This is where his critique of Q is relevant, as he argues that Q and Mark may not represented two independent sources. Really, we are not confident enough to discern whether any of our sources can truly be considered independent of one another. If that is the case, the the criterion is of no use.

The volume ends with two chapter by Scot McKnight and Dale Allison and a short conclusion by Keith. McKnight argues that the "Authentic Jesus" (the Jesus of the criteria) is of no use for the Church, because the Church already has its portrait of Jesus in the creeds and the Gospels. However, he does concede a limited apologetic worth contained in the Quest (though, not necessarily the criteria). Allison then provides his own musings on the use of the criteria. He remains very skeptical of their worth showing how he has grown increasingly wary of their use, for much of the same reasons as contributors argued. Keith then wraps it up in a hopeful tone, suggesting that the Quest is not bankrupt - we can still do real history - yet the game has certainly changed. The rules by which we used to work are no longer tenable and a new path must be charted. A path that admittedly has yet to be identified, however, work is being done and social memory may provide the missing key.

My Thoughts

As I said in introduction, this book has the potential, if widely read, to completely redefine the task of historical Jesus research. Each of the contributors is convincing, leaving the overall impression that things need to change. If historical Jesus research is to continue, than the criteria, at the most optimistic evaluation, need to be completely reworked.

It is a bit daunting because the old foundation is stripped away. A lot of questions are left unanswered. The way forward is unclear. But that is the cost of good history - a willingness to rethink from the ground up. This was much a needed volume. While it was not groundbreaking in its arguments (many of these arguments have been made previously), it was groundbreaking in its unified presentation.

A dart has been lodged in the heart of traditional Jesus scholarship. A new way of doing history needs to be found.

As someone who has a great interest in the Historical Jesus studies

As someone who has a great interest in the Historical Jesus studies, I was excited to get a review copy of the book Jesus, Criteria, and the Demise of Authenticity, by Chris Keith and Anthony Le Donne. The premise of the book is whether what historical Jesus scholars utilize to establish as to what Jesus really said isauthentic. The criteria that are analyzed in this book have been mentioned in John P.Meier's A Marginal Jew.

Here are the criteria that are discussed in this book:

1.Criteria of Multiple Attestation

3.The Criteria of Coherence

4. The Criteria of Dissimilarity

5. The Criteria of "Semitic (Aramaic) Influence on the Greek"

My thoughts on the book:

The overall mood of the book is that the criteria that have been and continued to be used by Jesus scholars need to be "jettisoned." The authors (especially Le Donne) seem to be calling for Jesus scholars to punt to more of a post modern view of history. The attempt to use such criteria are a form of what Le Donne calls "positivist" historiography. Hence, the attempt to "verify" and "objectify" a historical Jesus is a wasted process. In other words, it is time to move on. There is no finding any kind of objective criteria that would ever help us to get to the Historical Jesus.

Each chapter attempts to show the shortcomings of each of these criteria. It is because of this I find the authors to overstate their case. If I was to see this book rewritten, I would like to see the authors say the criteria needs to be modified and not entirely jettisoned.Despite the book's shortcomings, there are some strengths. Overall, each article is well written and the footnotes leave the reader with plenty of extra reading material to pursue for further research. Each scholar is qualified to speak on these topics. The issues they bring up are very relevant to the topic of Jesus studies. I also found Mark Goodacre's chapter on Multiple Attestation chapter to be helpful. This is mostly because I have always found Q to be a questionable source to use for Historical Jesus scholars. I also agree with some of the criticisms about the dissimilarity criteria.

In my conversations with Michael Licona about the book, he has told me there will be a response to this book sometime later this year. After all, almost all the Historical Jesus books on my shelf have utilized some of the criteria. For me personally, I think the work on eyewitness testimony by Richard Bauckham and the ongoing work of social memory is promising. I advise reading Michael Bird's latest book The Gospel of the Lord.

Highly recommended!

This is a highly recommended book for those who are interested in historical Jesus studies. The authors take issue with the "Criteria of Authenticity" the backbone of most of historical Jesus research done over the last several decades. The authors represent differing positions, some believe that the criteria should be completely abandoned, while others see some of the criteria as being useful but needing revision. This is not a fundamentalist hit job but a scholarly tome that should be taken seriously, even if one doesn't fully agree with the positions taken.

About the Author
Arundhati Roy studied architecture in New Delhi, where she now lives. She is the author of the novel The God of Small Things, for which she received the 1997 Booker Prize. The novel has been translated into forty languages worldwide. Infuriating, but entertaining. Polemic, but true. Short, but grand in scope and insight.

With her outstanding ability to craft well-written, witty and biting sentences, and the canny insightfulness of her observations, Arundhati Roy achieves something quite amazing: an easy read that is infuriating, but entertaining, polemic, but true, short, but grand in scope and insight.

I’m not usually one for polemic writing and an anecdotal rather than academic approach to facts, and I’m not crazy about books that are actually collections of essays. Yet in her very own enraged, engaged and witty style, Arundhati Roy manages to bind it all together into one powerful narrative, and expose on less than 100 pages, more – at times surprising – aspects of the insidious nature of global capitalism (and on the threat it poses to our freedom and well-being), than a half dozen much longer academic treatises on the subject combined. While you will learn a lot about politics in what is purportedly the world’s largest democracy – India – the principles at work and the insights gained are universal in nature, so that if you don’t see the relevance of Indian politics to your life, you needn’t worry. This book is relevant! Among many other insights of global importance, it shows what happens if market dynamics and greed are left unchecked by an inadequate and corrupt political system. It shows that many things are not what they seem to be on the surface – and in your daily newscast.

To be sure, it cannot replace genuinely analytic inquiry into the effects of a “free market” system, such as Thomas Piketty undertakes in Capital in the Twenty-First Century, but no matter what your political persuasion, you will most probably walk away from this Ghost Story with a richer understanding of the world we live in and of an economic system that may have many virtues (its emphasis on individual freedom foremost), but that clear-thinking and astute citizens cannot leave without modification, if we wish to see our freedoms preserved – not only nominally and relegated to the make-believe form of consumer choice, but genuine freedom, in all actuality. In the same vein, I also recommend David Graeber, The Democracy Project.

Does capitalism still generate interest?

This is Roy's polemic account of the path India has trodden as a result of its fascination with the American way of life, a way that political and corporate leaders of the USA have been selling to the world for decades. The result? Just as in America, the wealth of the nation is held by the smallest of minority - in a nation of 1.2 billion, India's one hundred richest people own assets equivalent to one quarter of the GDP.

In a biting narrative Roy tells about the ills of capitalism and the self-serving policies that keep capitalism growing in smaller and smaller numbers of the nation's population. Her account is as despondent as it is infuriating. She asserts that one should not be fooled by the corporate philanthropy. She illustrates with examples of how corporate foundations from America win over protest groups like the Black Panther in the US and the ANC in South Africa, turning them into moderates who crack down on fundamentalists - effectively doing the job for the corporate organisations.

A less polemical work on the same subject of the unequal wealth is Thomas Piketty's book, 'Capital in the Twenty-First Century'. That book was recently criticized for using inaccurate data, but Paul Krugman published an article in The New York Times defending Piketty's thesis - in fact, Krugman claimed that he (Krugman) warned of the problem in an article he wrote in 1992.

Important and Searing Book on the Indian Polity

Arundhati Roy has once again does what she does best- in "Capitalism: A Ghost Story" she tears apart the muscular, fanciful renditions of India that one reads about in the WSJ, Barron's, or the fickle Indian press and tells it like it is- India's polity is riven by divisions along class, caste, gender, language, geographical, and religious divides; moreover, the nexus between big business and big politics (along with an oligopolistic media) has created war-like conditions across vast swaths of the country and, further, has created untenable living conditions for hundreds of millions of Indian citizens.

This book is also about the change public face of India, now interested in embracing power-politics and bigness versus any sense of justice, internally or externally.

Roy is in many ways not only a true progressive but also a foil to India's shrinking "liberal" community who like to profess great decency and erudition while destitution is commonplace right outside their doors.

Roy polarizes- and rightly so. That she herself is under such attack in a country she so clearly loves is a sign of the encroaching illiberalism of a country which once lay claim to a powerful vision (though not reality) of social justice.

Please read this book.
