How to Debate Leftists and Destroy Them: 11 Rules for Winning the Argument, by Ben Shapiro

The problem, as Ben Shapiro puts it in this must-read, is that “because conservatives don’t think about how to win that they constantly lose” in confrontations with leftists. The solution is to stop taking the bullying and learning to argue for victory.
Among Shapiro’s rules for beating the left in confrontations are:
Be willing to take a punch. (conservatives tend to shy away from confrontations because the left is rhetorically violent; but it is important “to walk toward the fire.” )
Hit hard, hit first. (leftists stage muggings; instead of fighting by Marquis of Queensberry rules, conservatives need to accept the strategy Mike Tyson: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”)
Immediately frame the debate. (“When you’re discussing global warming , for example, the proper question is not whether man is causing global warming but whether man can fix global warming—a question to which the universally acknowledged answer is no unless we are willing to revert to the pre industrial age.”)
There are eight more rules that will allow a conservative to debate a leftist and destroy him. How to Debate Leftists and Destroy Them is not just a “how to” book. It is a survival manual.

Mixed feelings
By Freeman
I review this as a big fan of the Breitbart network.

My main critique of this book is that it's too brief in its rules and all rules lack specific examples. There is lots of hyperbole that paint pictures of rabid liberals that need to be engaged and shot down, very few examples. The only reference Ben uses is his appearance on Pier Morgan's show. For example, Rule #5 is "Spot Inconsistencies in the Left's Arguments." The arguments he presents are vague ideas but ultimately strawmen.

I realize that it's a $0.99 book that is only 20 pages long, so that my not be entirely fair. But to be honest, it reads as if Shapiro thought he could make a few bucks summarizing his exchange with Piers Morgan. And practically, this book is worthless. The "rules" are very brief. Shapiro is a greatly experienced journalist and media personality. These rules work because he practices them every single day. One would need to read various media sites daily and talk to liberals daily in order to be effective. This book sort of suckers people in to thinking reading 20 pages will turn them into Andrew Breitbart.

Rather than read this, I recommend going on YouTube and watching Shapiro, Breitbart, and Pollak actually debating liberals! Breitbart on Martin Bashir's show is legendary, so is Joe Pollak on O'Brien's show.

The 11 Steps on How to Debate Leftists
By P. H. Foley
1. Walk Toward the Fire
“The left knows this is war. And they know you are the enemy. You will be castigated. You will get punched. That’s the way it will go because that’s how the left wins: through intimidation and cruelty. You have to take the punch, you have to brush it off. You have to be willing to take the punch.”

2. Hit First
“Don’t take the punch first. Hit first. Hit hard. Hit where it counts. Mike Tyson used to say, “Everybody has a plan ‘til they get punched in the mouth.” That’s exactly correct. But throwing the first punch requires game-planning. Walking through the door, you have one shot – one! – to put someone down for the count from the beginning of a debate. If done properly, any debate on a single topic can be over within the first 30 seconds.”

3. Frame Your Opponent
“I have argued that the left’s entire playbook consists of a single play: characterizing the opposition. It’s incredibly effective. And the only way to get beyond character arguments is to frame your opponent – make it toxic for your opponent to slur you. Then, hopefully, you can move the debate to more substantive territory. This is the vital first step. It is the only first step…There is no way to convince someone that you don’t hate him or her. You can convince him or her, however, that your opposition is a liar and a hater.”

4. Frame the Debate
“It’s important that you neuter those buzzwords quickly, because otherwise you will be arguing against nonsense terms that can be used against you. You can’t argue against empty terms. So don’t accept the premises of their arguments, which are largely buzzword based…It’s important that you neuter those buzzwords quickly, because otherwise you will be arguing against nonsense terms that can be used against you. You can’t argue against empty terms. So don’t accept the premises of their arguments, which are largely buzzword based…As a general matter, the left’s favorite three lines of attack are (1) you’re stupid; (2) you’re mean; (3) you’re corrupt. Sarah Palin is supposedly stupid; Mitt Romney is supposedly mean; Dick Cheney is supposedly corrupt. Take away those lines of attack and watch the discomfort set in.”

5. Spot Inconsistencies in the Left’s Argument
“The left’s arguments are chock full of inconsistencies. Internal inconsistencies — inconsistencies that are inherent to the left’s general worldview. That’s because very few people on the left will acknowledge their actual agenda, which is quite extreme. Leftists prefer to argue half-measures in which they don’t truly believe…There are almost invariably unbridgeable inconsistencies in the left’s publicly stated positions that are at war with their actual fundamental principles. Your goal is to make the left admit once and for all what they believe about policy by exposing those inconsistencies.”

6. Force Leftists to Answer Questions
“This is really just a corollary of Rule #4. Leftists are only comfortable when they are forcing you to answer questions. If they have to answer questions, they begin to scratch their heads. The questions they prefer to ask are about your character; the questions they prefer not to answer are all of them. Instead, they like to dodge issues in favor of those character arguments.”

7. Do Not Get Distracted
“You may notice when arguing with someone on the left that every time you begin to make a point, that leftist begins shouting about George W. Bush. It’s like Leftist Tourette’s Syndrome. “Why did Obama blow out the budget?” “BUUUUUUUSHHHH!!!!!” Don’t be fooled. You don’t need to follow the idiotic rabbit down into his Bushy rabbit hole…Arguing with the left is like attempting to nail jello to the wall. It’s slippery and messy and a waste of resources. You must force them to answer the question.”

8. You Don’t Have To Defend People on Your Side
“Conservatives get trapped in this gambit routinely, because they figure that the enemy of their enemy is their friend: if the left is attacking someone, he must be worth defending. But that’s not true…Don’t follow people. Follow principle.”

9. If You Don’t Know Something, Admit It
“Don’t get caught in the trap of believing you have to know everything about everything. Your opponent will undoubtedly know something you don’t. It’s fair to simply state, “I didn’t know that, but I’ll be happy to research and get back to you.” Another side-note here: don’t bring up a topic with which you aren’t passingly familiar.”

10. Let the Other Side Have Meaningless Victories
“Leftists prize faux moderation above all else; by granting them a point or two, you can convince them that you aren’t a radical right-winger at all. After all, everyone can admit both parties are terrible!…If the left engages you on immigration reform, your answer should be that you are for immigration reform. Now, how do they define immigration reform? That’s the key question. But because you’ve always granted the premise that you like the idea of immigration reform, you don’t look like a naysayer off the bat…The conversation is meaningless until you force the left to define terms. Until then, we can all agree on useless platitudes.”

11. Body Language Matters
“The Left is expert at imagistics. The right is not, because the right falsely believes that shallow imagistics can be beaten with substance. Which has worked out fabulously for every great actress who is 300 lbs. in Hollywood — all two of them who are working…Leftists prize faux moderation above all else; by granting them a point or two, you can convince them that you aren’t a radical right-winger at all. After all, everyone can admit both parties are terrible!”

not worth your money or time. it does not teach how to debate.
By Christopher 84
Doesn't really address issues that are topics of debate. Only describes how to frame arguments or debates to give you the edge and hopefully win. Does not have substantive material on policy or framework of issues and what they mean and how to defend our view on some issues that are close to republicans. I want to learn our issues in-depth and learn how to defend and even influence others, not to antagonize or cajole democrats only to look foolish when I have no factual information or data.

An Excellent Novel That Is Set in the Tasmanian Penal Colony of the Nineteenth Century
By John Lewis
I seldom pick up a book that is such a page turner that my friends notice my antisocial behavior when I sit in a corner with my kindle. This is one of those books. It was very difficult to put it down.

I am amazed that Courtenay is not a more widely read author in the states. His books are well crafted, his characters engaging, and the stories flow along briskly.

This is my second Courtenay book. I had previously read "Whitethorn" , which was set in South Africa, and was similarly impressed with it.

"The Potato Factory" is laced with real historical figures like Ikey Solomon, a notorious criminal in his time, who is thought to have been the model for Fagin in Oliver Twist. Ikey and several of his family members and "business associates" end up transported to Hobart Tasmania where much of this story unfolds.

Most of the first half of the book takes place in London before the main characters are transported to the penal colony in Tasmania for various offenses including fencing, brothel keeping, and counterfeiting,

I first learned of Ikey in Robert Hughes' excellent history of Australian transportation "The Fatal Shore" and many of the events and characters in Courtenay's novel are consistent with what is regarded as historical fact. Ikey was in the papers a lot in his day.

My partner and I just finished spending a year sailing around Australia including several weeks in Tasmania where we were able to see and even anchor in many of the locations that play a part in this fascinating novel. This experience of actually being in the locations in this book, no doubt, enhanced my appreciation of the setting of this novel but the fact that Courtenay does an excellent job of describing the Tasmanian wilderness should bring the story alive for those who have not had the good fortune to visit the forlorn destination of so many of England's criminal class during the 19th century.

"The Potato Factory" is the first book of a trilogy that includes "Tomo and Hawk" and "Solomon's Song".

One really nice feature of reading books like this on my kindle is that the built-n dictionary lets me instantly look up the definitions of many of the 19th century English words that the street smart characters in this novel use.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical novels. Courtenay's novel is every bit as good a read as the historical novels of Gore Vidal, whose work I really like.

My First Bad Bryce Courtenay Experience
By Lee P. Radke
I was tempted to say that I hated it. I loved both "The Power if One" and "Tandia." This however was far from the engrossing well built narrative of those two books. The problem was simple. Much like the two aforementioned books this one had intricate, well developed characters and plots. The main difference between them was with this one I just didn't care. Even granting that Peekay had a bit of what I call "Batman Complex" (where someone is too well suited, clever, or is precocious beyond believability.) I still very much enjoyed his story and felt tied to his fate. I don't care about Mary or Ikey or other Mary or Bob Marley or anyone or anything going on in "The Potato Factory" I'm sure there are people who will and do like this book. I could not however, recommend this to anyone.

A Shocking Chapter in British History
By David G. Lewis
One of the best books I have read for a long time. The author alternates the chapters of each of several main charactors (Ikey, Mary, Martha etc.) which gives the reader a clear insight on their lives and plans for the future. Time is not wasted on day to day matters and at times the story jumps two or three years ahead. The story also describes in graphic detail the misery of the voyage from England to Tasmania and the shocking suffering of those imprisoned there.

Numbering system is clear and easily understood, which enables one to search forward and backward in lineage without difficulty. Additionally, many persons have a short history of their occupation, military service, etc. which can be facinating.

Terrible book. Do NOT recommend.
By Bradley Farless
I'm in my 2nd semester of Arabic at the college level and we're using this book. Well, using is sort of the wrong word. Better to say we're struggling with this book, because it's just so horribly bad.

To start with, as other reviewers mentioned, the jump between Alif Baa (the first book in the series) and this one is just way too big. We covered Alif Baa in the first semester and it basically taught us how to read, write, and pronounce Arabic, which was fine. We got a few phrases and learned the names of some of the grammatical marks. We learned the voweling. That was fine. But, when you open Al-Kitaab, everything in the table of contents is in Arabic, even though it's almost all words you won't have been introduced to yet. One of the first exercises asks you to question your classmate about certain aspects of their life, when that requires vocabulary you won't have and a knowledge of Arabic sentence structure that you won't have.

I'm also really agitated about how unorganized this book is. There is no unified area to look at pronoun charts, conjugation charts, or plural charts. It's introduced sporadically throughout the text. It would be better to have it in an index. In other cases, you're given the conjugation of a verb like "I memorize", "he reads" as vocabulary words, but you're not given the full conjugation chart so you know how to use it for more than just that one conjugation. Of course, you could go back through the whole text to see if it was explained somewhere, but that's a crap way of doing things.

Really, without a teacher to explain things clearly, this book would be completely useless. COMPLETELY USELESS. And a complete waste of money. If you don't need this for a class, DO NOT BUY IT.

Between the end of Spring Semester and Fall Semester (3rd level of Arabic), I'm going to have to review so I don't forget all the Arabic I've learned, but I'm going to have to do that with other materials, because this book wouldn't do anything but frustrate me.

Edit: I'm now in my 3rd semester of Arabic, still using this book. Every time I open this book I get angry. Very angry. It's extremely confusing and the way grammatical concepts are introduced is ridiculous. They either say too little or too much and then jump right into something else. It's absurd. I had to re-read the two pages on fronted predicates 4 times and then go ask a native speaker before I understood what it means and how it's supposed to be used. I had to get help from outside the book to figure out what musaadar are and how they work, and now I'm sitting here looking at an exercise (on pg 155) asking me to ask "...who should be able to join the army". We haven't learned the vocabulary for "should be able to", so how the hell am I supposed to ask this question? Why am I being asked to do something that hasn't been introduced yet? Another complaint I have is that there just aren't enough reading exercises in the book. The easiest way to learn usage and grammar is through exposure, for me at least, and there's just really not a lot to read in this book. I'm not a bad student. My GPA hovers around a 3.9. This book is just terrible, and it's affected my academic performance.

A huge burden on teachers and students
By beetrave
I recently took an introductory Arabic course at a large public university that uses this textbook. Having learned another "critical language" for nearly twenty years and having taught that language at the university level for another five years, I hope that I can provide some helpful perspective on this new edition of Al-Kitaab.

Some of the methods used by this textbook--especially its focus on listening comprehension--are excellent. Despite certain advantages, however, I believe the third edition would work only for a course taught by a very experienced teacher who has already developed a large number of exercises and assignments that can be provided separately to students. Without all of these additional materials already in place, however, the current book/website package is simply not enough for teaching the language in a way that will allow students to feel that they are making progress and mastering the material.

More specific comments:

1) Many textbook sets come with a separate workbook or extensive exercises to practice the vocabulary and patterns taught in each lesson. They may be simple, repetitive, and kind of boring, but this method allows students to form sentences and learn through repetition. In this edition al-Kitaab, however, very few exercises are available in the textbook, and nearly all of them are "fill in the blank"; students are rarely, if ever, required to write a full sentence in Arabic - a decision by the authors that I find impossible to understand. Moreover, rather than ask students to perform one type of isolated task repeatedly, e.g. conjugate a set of verbs, practice the iDaafa form, or insert subject and object pronouns, etc., many of the exercises are extremely dense, using vocabulary and grammatical forms taught in other lessons, often in forms (like the plural) that cannot be looked up in the glossary. In many cases, it feels as if a game of "gotcha" is being played - the student simply cannot proceed if he or she has not learned all of the previous material perfectly. In other cases, the exercises introduce word order and vocabulary that students have not learned, with the expectation that they will simply "catch on" or go with the flow until the material is explained. The result, however, is the opposite: some of the exercises are so difficult to use that I saw several very motivated learners in my class become completely frustrated with the book.

2) The textbook focuses far too much on teaching grammatical terminology *in Arabic*, at the expense of actually conveying information on how Arabic grammar and word order work. For example, in Lesson 4 the text goes into a very detailed discussion of noun sentences and verb sentences, all without providing explicit discussion and examples of how word order really works in these sentences; that very basic aspect of teaching, apparently, is left to the instructor. (A far clearer and more accessible explanation was found on half a page in Schulz's "Standard Arabic: An Elementary-Intermediate Course.") If the authors want to take a communicative approach, it makes very little sense to force feed this terminology (and always print it in Arabic script after it is taught for the first time, without romanization) without providing the necessary amount of examples and review.

3) Too often, the vocabulary used in the lessons is not matched well with the glossary or the overall pacing of the book. For example, you will encounter words like "television," "Russia," and "Riyadh," many times in the exercises, but if you want to write them yourself and check your spelling, you will not find them in the English-Arabic glossary at the back of the book. By the time you reach Lesson 9 or 10, you will also encounter terms in the exercises that have not yet been introduced in any of the lessons, and thus end up spending time flipping through the glossary to figure out the meaning of a word from Lesson 11 or 12 -- instead of focusing on what is being taught in the current lesson. I don't know if this is the result of poor editing or hard-line "communicative" strategies, but it is certainly a waste of time for the student.

4) The textbook (and publisher) should just come out and say that students need to purchase three different products: the textbook, the website subscription, and the answer key. The free CD that comes with the book was very confusing to me (in many places is it not clear what the headphones icon printed in the text is supposed to mean). Moreover, given the difficulty of the exercises, especially the sentences on the audio files that are supposed to provide context for vocabulary, there is no way to approach some of the exercises without the answer key.

From my point of view, many of these problems could be solved by providing an easy, straightforward workbook to go along with the main text. Barring that, however, I can only recommend this edition with a huge, up-front warning that the instructor is going to have to reinvent the wheel with each lesson by designing reasonable homework assignments that do not confuse or overload students.

One step forward two steps backwards
By Jessie Carduner
I learned from the 2nd edition this summer and loved it. It was very systematic and rigorous. Now I am continuing to study on my own and decided to purchase the 3rd edition so that I could also use the e-book, which is not available for the 2nd ed. The 3rd edition has added information about dialects, which is nice to a point, but cutting some MSA drills out and making the remaining drills shorter to fit practice with dialects is a badly thought out trade off. The result is going to be that students end up with a weaker command of MSA and probably will not master much of the dialects either because the practice isn't really systematic. In the early stages of learning, the most important thing is repetition until processing becomes automatic. The 2nd edition did a marvelous job of this. The 3rd edition, not so much. The 3rd has more information but far less repetition. I really miss the writing practice and chance to get feedback on that. Dialects should be informational or sold in a separate supplement and Al-Kitaab should go back to its older format. I especially don't see the need to write out exercises in dialect. Those should be for speaking and listening and recognition. Also, I am very disappointed that the glossaries in the ebook do not have links to sounds for the vocabulary. This means the user still has to go find the word in the chapter if s/he wants to hear it pronounced, and even then not all the forms are pronounced. If you have a choice between 2nd and 3rd edition, go with the 2nd.

Models mean profit
By John Muller
New flash, all big companies' marketing is science based, using extensive modeling. Because models reduce risk, skewing the odds in your favor. Every business regardless of size can and should use them. The models in this book are powerful and broad-based and good place to start.

I own an analytical marketing company and created most of these models in a spreadsheet (some of which I was already using). Using them helps my clients make significant and correct decisions. They give focus, direction, and most important, knowledge. Further, size is just not an issue; any business can use them. Most of my clients are small to mediums size, but all have enough data to utilize models.

Many are also useful for startups as well. Entrepreneurs are spectacularly bad at marketing (marketing isn't selling), not understanding that marketing starts well before you spend any time or money developing your product/service. It is this analytical, science-based marketing that sets a solid foundation.

Most businesses don't use science-based marketing and 95% of them fail. 80% of entrepreneurs fail in the first 18 months, according to a Forbes article. Models and other tools available set you up for success. It is just foolhardy not to use them

Ivy Thompson. Rock goddess. Notorious for leaving a string of broken hearts behind her tour bus.

Jessica always looked down on those brokenhearted girls. Silly groupies who loved a terrible band. She'd never do something crazy like that.

Until she did.

It was all a big accident. Jessica was dragged to their concert against her will. She had no idea the sexy girl she met before the concert was Ivy, and by the time she realized who Ivy really was it was too late.

She was in too deep.

Gorgeous. Smart. Sexy. Yeah, Ivy Thompson was the last thing Jessica needed in her life until she was the only thing she needed in her life. But can the reformed rock star and the accidental groupie, women from two very different worlds, get over those differences long enough to find true love?

4.5 stars! Loved it!
By Kalipall
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have to admit to really enjoying Archer's style of writing. Anyone who has read and enjoyed any previous books of hers will readily enjoy this one as well. She has made an artform out of the initial stages of a relationship - that falling in love stage. It's exciting to read about the initial attraction, nervousness, and shy vulnerability inherent in the beginning of a relationship. The premise of this story is extremely amusing. A rock star, used to wowing any woman she talks to, decides to give a fan the thrill of a lifetime. Meanwhile, that "fan" dislikes the band, and the music, and is only going to the concert because her best friend blackmailed her into it. Instead of a thrilled scream and astonished face, Ivy gets a blank look because Jessica doesn't recognize her at all. The two seem to hit it off though, each thinking the other is pretty hot. What follows is a dream come true for any fan - Jessica gets pulled up on stage and sung to, backstage passes are slid into her back pocket, she gets to hang at the after-party, and gets taken back to Ivy's tour bus for a hot one-night stand. A typical groupie experience, she thinks. But Ivy has changed from the person she was during the band's heyday, and there's nothing typical about her response to Jessica. There's a big misunderstanding at the end of their initial time together, and Jessica decides that the relationship was all a lie and she's better off leaving Ivy to her fans.
This is where I get a bit lost as far as the storyline goes. A lot of Jessica's response is based on her own insecurities. I don't blame her; it would definitely be difficult for anyone not humungously arrogant and conceited not to have a bit of trepidation when entering into a relationship with someone famous. After all, she's famous and can have anybody she wants, so why would she want me? Jessica thinks this many times, and even asks Ivy that question. Ivy on the other hand, makes such a dumb mistake with her friend Gareth that it borders on self-destructive, which sounds like par for the course to be honest. In the end, there's a grand gesture from Ivy to apologize and get her girl back, which was pretty awesome. But I also thought Jessica needed to apologize a bit for her actions.
All in all, another exciting, fast-paced love story that kept me involved and cheering for the two lovers. Can't wait for the next book!

In return for an honest review...
By Kindle Customer
Ok, I really enjoy Mia's writing style. The story is fun and pretty easy to get through in a single reading. I have enjoyed all of Ms. Archer's books to date, even since the move away from more elicit scenes of intimacy, but the hesitancy in the characters tended to be a bit more repetitive and more than once I was tempted to skip some of the internal debate and get to the point.

On a positive note, the build up between the characters is palpable, and I found I was getting excited right along with the pair. The downside is that right when they get to a point right before they get to anything close to foreplay, the next paragraph takes you to the post-intimate scene and you're left with something akin to a Gatorade shower without much to celebrate. You got all heated up and end up ice-bucketed.

In the end though, I don't really have much in the way of outstandingly negative or positive remarks. This one was kinda middle of the road for me in terms of other books by the same author.

Sweet and Funny, but somehow misses the mark
By Jen
I liked this story, don't get me wrong. It was sweet and funny, but I found myself loosing interest and skimming it for the bare bones of the story. I just didn't feel all that invested with either of the main characters even if I did like how the met and the scene at the concert. And there was the huge incident that the rock star kept referring to and as the reader it was like "please tell me more" but the story never really gets into it. Don't get me wrong. I liked the story. So far I think I've read everything by Mia Archer. This one however missed the mark for me.

The Story of a New Name: Neapolitan Novels, Book Two, by Elena Ferrante

The second book, following last year’s My Brilliant Friend, featuring the two friends Lila and Elena. The two protagonists are now in their twenties. Marriage appears to have imprisoned Lila. Meanwhile, Elena continues her journey of self-discovery. The two young women share a complex and evolving bond that brings them close at times, and drives them apart at others. Each vacillates between hurtful disregard and profound love for the other. With this complicated and meticulously portrayed friendship at the center of their emotional lives, the two girls mature into women, paying the cruel price that this passage exacts.

From Publishers Weekly
The second in a trilogy, book two rejoins narrator Elena Greco and her "brilliant friend" Lina Cerullo as they leave behind their claustrophobic Italian girlhood and enter the tumultuous world of young womanhood with all its accompanying love, loss, and confusion. Against the backdrop of l960s/70s Naples, the previously inseparable girls embark on diverse paths. At 16, Lila has married the prosperous local grocer, Stefano Carraci, only to discover at their wedding reception that he has already betrayed her and damned their union. Conversely Elena has chosen education, a less traditional route to free her from the stultifying village life. Lina asks Elena to hide a box of notebooks from her husband. Instead, she dumps them in the river but not without first reading them. Ferrante masterfully combines Elena's recollections of events with Lila's point of view as documented in her notebooks to drive the narrative. The women's fraught relationship and shifting fortunes are the life forces of this poignant book.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Ferrante continues the beautiful tale she started in My Brilliant Friend (2012) with this brilliant second book of a promised trilogy. At 16, best friends Elena and Lila are weary of their impoverished neighborhood and its crippling traditions, but while Lila seeks to alter these circumstances through an advantageous marriage, Elena strives to leave it behind by pursuing her education. When Lila’s marriage fails to help her realize her goals, she becomes increasingly spiteful, and Elena, busy with an acceptance to college, grows critical of her progressively unpredictable friend. Once reliant on one another, the girls now find themselves occupying very different spheres in the rapidly changing landscape of 1970s Naples. As circumstances alternately draw them close and push them apart, they face difficult changes in the friendship that has always been their strongest source of love and support. Ferrante’s writing is captivating and insightful. She delves deeply into the character of the girls’ friendship, ushering them into womanhood with an honesty that is acutely personal. Her keen grasp of emotional nuances and minutiae evokes the work of D. H. Lawrence, and the richness of her storytelling is likely to please fans of Sara Gruen and Silvia Avallone. --Cortney Ophoff

Praise for Elena Ferrante and The Neapolitan Novels

The United States

“One of the more nuanced portraits of feminine friendship in recent memory.” —Megan O’Grady, Vogue

“Amazing! My Brilliant Friend took my breath away. If I were president of the world I would make everyone read this book. It is so honest and right and opens up heart to so much. “I like the Italian writer, Elena Ferrante, a lot. I've been reading all her work and all about her.” — John Waters, actor and director

“Elena Ferrante may be the best contemporary novelist you’ve never heard of”— The Economist

“Ferrante’s freshness has nothing to do with fashion…it is imbued with the most haunting music of all, the echoes of literary history.” —The New York Times Book Review

“I am such a fan of Ferrante’s work, and have been for quite a while.” —Jennifer Gilmore, author of The Mothers

“The women’s fraught relationship and shifting fortunes are the life forces of the poignant book” — Publisher’s Weekly

“When I read [the Neapolitan novels] I find that I never want to stop. I feel vexed by the obstacles—my job, or acquaintances on the subway—that threaten to keep me apart from the books. I mourn separations (a year until the next one—how?). I am propelled by a ravenous will to keep going.”—Molly Fischer, The New Yorker

“[Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels] don’t merely offer a teeming vision of working-class Naples, with its cobblers and professors, communists and mobbed-up businessmen, womanizing poets and downtrodden wives; they present one of modern fiction’s richest portraits of a friendship.” —John Powers, Fresh Air, NPR

“Elena Ferrante is one of the great novelists of our time. Her voice is passionate, her view sweeping and her gaze basilisk . . . In these bold, gorgeous, relentless novels, Ferrante traces the deep connections between the political and the domestic. This is a new version of the way we live now — one we need, one told brilliantly, by a woman.”—Roxana Robinson, The New York Times Book Review

“An intoxicatingly furious portrait of enmeshed friends Lila and Elena, Bright and passionate girls from a raucous neighborhood in world-class Naples. Ferrante writes with such aggression  and unnerving psychological insight about the messy complexity of female friendship that the real world can drop away when you’re reading her.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Ferrante seasons the prose with provocative perceptions not unlike the way Proust did.” —Shelf Awareness

“It would be difficult to find a deeper portrait of women’s friendship than the one in Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels, which unfold from the fifties to the twenty-first century to tell a single story with the possessive force of an origin myth.”—Megan O’Grady, Vogue

“Ferrante’s writing is so unencumbered, so natural, and yet so lovely, brazen, and flush. The constancy of detail and the pacing that zips and skips then slows to a real-time crawl have an almost psychic effect, bringing you deeply into synchronicity with the discomforts and urgency of the characters’ emotions. Ferrante is unlike other writers—not because she’s innovative, but rather because she’s unselfconscious and brutally, diligently honest.”—Minna Proctor, Bookforum

“Ferrante can do a woman’s interior dialogue like no one else, with a ferocity that is shockingly honest, unnervingly blunt.”—Booklist

“The truest evocation of a complex and lifelong friendship between women I’ve ever read.” —Emily Gould, author of Friendship

“Elena Ferrante is the author of several remarkable, lucid, austerely honest novels . . . My Brilliant Friend is a large, captivating, amiably peopled bildungsroman.”—James Wood, The New Yorker

“Compelling, visceral and immediate . . . a riveting examination of power . . . The Neapolitan novels are a tour de force.”—Jennifer Gilmore, The Los Angeles Times

“Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay surpasses the rapturous storytelling of the previous titles in the Neapolitan Novels.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Ferrante’s voice feels necessary. She is the Italian Alice Munro.”—Mona Simpson, author of Casebook and Anywhere But Here

“Elena Ferrante will blow you away.”—Alice Sebold, author of The Lovely Bones

“The Days of Abandonment is a powerful, heartrending novel.”—Jhumpa Lahiri, Pulitzer-prize winning author of The Lowland

“The Neapolitan novel cycle is an unconditional masterpiece . . . I read all the books in a state of immersion; I was totally enthralled. There was nothing else I wanted to do except follow the lives of Lila and Lenù to the end.”—Jhumpa Lahiri, Pulitzer-prize winning author of The Lowland

“Reading Ferrante reminded me of that child-like excitement when you can’t look up from the page, when your eyes seem to be popping from your head, when you think: I didn’t know books could do this!”—Elizabeth Strout, Pulitzer-prize winning author of The Burgess Boys

“Elena Ferrante: the best angry woman writer ever!”—John Waters, director

“The feverish speculation about the identity of Elena Ferrante betrays an understandable failure of imagination: it seems impossible that right now somewhere someone sits in a room and draws up these books. Palatial and heartbreaking beyond measure, the Neapolitan novels seem less written than they do revealed. One simply surrenders. When the final volume appears—may that day never come!—they’re bound to be acknowledged as one of the most powerful works of art, in any medium, of our age.”—Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author of A Sense of Direction

“Ferrante tackles girlhood and friendship with amazing force.”—Gwyneth Paltrow, actor

“Elena Ferrante’s The Story of a New Name. Book two in her Naples trilogy. Two words: Read it.”—Ann Hood, writer (from Twitter)

“Ferrante continues to imbue this growing saga with great magic.”—Booklist(starred review)

“One of Italy’s best contemporary novelists.”?—The Seattle Times

“Ferrante’s emotional and carnal candor are so potent.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Elena Ferrante’s gutsy and compulsively readable new novel, the first of a quartet, is a terrific entry point for Americans unfamiliar with the famously reclusive writer, whose go-for-broke tales of women’s shadow selves—those ambivalent mothers and seething divorcées too complex or unseemly for polite society (and most literary fiction, for that matter)—shimmer with Balzacian human detail and subtle psychological suspense . . . The Neapolitan novels offer one of the more nuanced portraits of feminine friendship in recent memory—from the make-up and break-up quarrels of young girls to the way in which we carefully define ourselves against each other as teens—Ferrante wisely balances her memoir-like emotional authenticity with a wry sociological understanding of a society on the verge of dramatic change.” —Megan O’Grady, Vogue

“My Brilliant Friend is a sweeping family-centered epic that encompasses issues of loyalty, love, and a transforming Europe. This gorgeous novel should bring a host of new readers to one of Italy’s most acclaimed authors.”—The Barnes and Noble Review

“Ferrante draws an indelible picture of the city’s mean streets and the poverty, violence and sameness of lives lived in the same place forever . . . She is a fierce writer.”—Shelf Awareness

“Ferrante transforms the love, separation and reunion of two poor urban girls into the general tragedy of their city.”––The New York Times

“Beautifully translated by Ann Goldstein . . . Ferrante writes with a ferocious, intimate urgency that is a celebration of anger. Ferrante is terribly good with anger, a very specific sort of wrath harbored by women, who are so often not allowed to give voice to it. We are angry, a lot of the time, at the position we’re in—whether it’s as wife, daughter, mother, friend—and I can think of no other woman writing who is so swift and gorgeous in this rage, so bracingly fearless in mining fury.”—Susanna Sonnenberg, The San Francisco Chronicle

“Everyone should read anything with Ferrante’s name on it.”—The Boston Globe

“The through-line in all of Ferrante’s investigations, for me, is nothing less than one long, mind-and-heart-shredding howl for the history of women (not only Neapolitan women), and its implicit j’accuse . . . Ferrante’s effect, critics agree, is inarguable. ‘Intensely, violently personal’ and ‘brutal directness, familial torment’ is how James Wood ventures to categorize her—descriptions that seem mild after you’ve encountered the work.” —Joan Frank, The San Francisco Chronicle

“Lila, mercurial, unsparing, and, at the end of this first episode in a planned trilogy from Ferrante, seemingly capable of starting a full-scale neighborhood war, is a memorable character.”—Publishers Weekly

“An engrossing, wildly original contemporary epic about the demonic power of human (and particularly female) creativity checked by the forces of history and society.” —The Los Angeles Review of Books

“Ferrante’s own writing has no limits, is willing to take every thought forward to its most radical conclusion and backwards to its most radical birthing.”—The New Yorker

The United Kingdom

“The Story of a New Name, like its predecessor, is fiction of the very highest order.”—Independent on Sunday

“My Brilliant Friend, translated by Ann Goldstein, is stunning: an intense, forensic exploration of the friendship between Lila and the story’s narrator, Elena. Ferrante’s evocation of the working-class district of Naples where Elena and Lila first meet as two wiry eight-year-olds is cinematic in the density of its detail.”—The Times Literary Supplement

“This is a story about friendship as a mass of roiling currents—love, envy, pity, spite, dependency and Schadenfreude coiling around one another, tricky to untangle.”—Intelligent Life

“Elena Ferrante may be the best contemporary novelist you have never heard of. The Italian author has written six lavishly praised novels. But she writes under a pseudonym and will not offer herself for public consumption. Her characters likewise defy convention . . . Her prose is crystal, and her storytelling both visceral and compelling.”—The Economist

Ferrante is an expert above all at the rhythm of plotting: certain feuds and oppositions are kept simmering and in abeyance for years, so that a particular confrontation – a particular scene – can be many hundreds of pages in coming, but when it arrives seems at once shocking and inevitable.”—The Independent

Italy

“Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay evokes the vital flux of a heartbeat, of blood flowing through our veins.”––La Repubblica

“We don’t know who she is, but it doesn’t matter. Ferrante’s books are enthralling self-contained monoliths that do not seek friendship but demand silent, fervid admiration from her passionate readers . . . The thing most real in these novels is the intense, almost osmotic relationship that unites Elena and Lila, the two girls from a neighborhood in Naples who are the peerless protagonists of the Neapolitan novels.”—Famiglia Cristiana

“Today it is near impossible to find writers capable of bringing smells, tastes, feelings, and contradictory passions to their pages. Elena Ferrante, alone, seems able to do it. There is no writer better suited to composing the great Italian novel of her generation, her country, and her time than she.”—Il Manifesto

“Elena Ferrante is a very great novelist . . . In a world often held prisoner to minimalism, her writing is extremely powerful, earthy, and audacious.”—Francesca Marciano, author of The Other Language

“Regardless of who is behind the name Elena Ferrante, the mysterious pseudonym used by the author of the Neapolitan novels, two things are certain: she is a woman and she knows how to describe Naples like nobody else. She does so with a style that recalls an enchanted spider web with its expressive power and the wizardry with which it creates an entire world.” —Huffington Post (Italy)

“A marvel that is without limits and beyond genre.”—Il Salvagente

“Elena Ferrante is proving that literature can cure our present ills; it can cure the spirit by operating as an antidote to the nervous attempts we make to see ourselves reflected in the present-day of a country that is increasingly repellent.”—Il Mattino

“My Brilliant Friend flows from the soul like an eruption from Mount Vesuvio.”—La Repubblica

Australia

“No one has a voice quite like Ferrante’s. Her gritty, ruthlessly frank novels roar off the page with a barbed fury, like an attack that is also a defense . . . Ferrante’s fictions are fierce, unsentimental glimpses at the way a woman is constantly under threat, her identity submerged in marriage, eclipsed by motherhood, mythologised by desire. Imagine if Jane Austen got angry and you’ll have some idea of how explosive these works are.”—John Freeman, The Australian

“One of the most astounding—and mysterious—contemporary Italian novelists available in translation, Elena Ferrante unfolds the tumultuous inner lives of women in her thrillingly menacing stories of lost love, negligent mothers and unfulfilled desires.”—The Age

“Ferrante bewitches with her tiny, intricately drawn world . . . My Brilliant Friend journeys fearlessly into some of that murkier psychological territory where questions of individual identity are inextricable from circumstance and the ever-changing identities of others.” —The Melbourne Review

“The Neapolitan novels move far from contrivance, logic or respectability to ask uncomfortable questions about how we live, how we love, how we singe an existence in a deeply flawed world that expects pretty acquiescence from its women. In all their beauty, their ugliness, their devotion and deceit, these girls enchant and repulse, like life, like our very selves.” —The Sydney Morning Herald

“The best thing I’ve read this year, far and away, would be Elena Ferrante…I just think she puts most other writing at the moment in the shade. She’s marvelous. I like her so much I’m now doing something I only do when I really love the writer: I’m only allowing myself two pages a day.” —Richard Flanagan, author of Book prize finalist, The Narrow Road to the Deep North

Spain

“Elena Ferrante’s female characters are genuine works of art . . . It is clear that her novel is the child of Italian neorealism and an abiding fascination with scene.”—El Pais

ANOTHER TRIUMPH FOR ELENA FERRANTE
By ann kern
I turned off the phone, locked the door - two days of intense bliss. THE STORY OF A NEW NAME is part two of Ferrante's masterful trilogy and it DOES NOT DISAPPOINT! The writing is brilliantly lyrical and relentlessly candid, the focus is intensely personal, but the sweep of the story is vast. We track Lina and Elena, now beyond childhood, into young womanhood -- lovers, husbands, children, accomplishments and tragedy as they discover sex and romantic love. In the vein of Garcia Marquez and Bellow, the intimate stories refract into detailed murals of a society, a nation. I can't think of a writer working today more adept at turning a story with shock, at making the reader gasp.

Great, great, great. And the release date for part three is WHEN??????

"Is it possible that our parents never die, that every child inevitably conceals them in himself?"
By Mary Whipple
The Story of a New Name (which is called, simply, My Brilliant Friend, Volume II, in Italy), continues the epic saga author Elena Ferrante began in 2012 with the publication of My Brilliant Friend, set in postwar Naples. In The Story of a New Name, she continues the lives of these same characters as they move into the 1960s. Over fifty individual characters from nine families appear in the novel, making the "Index of Characters and Notes on the Events of Volume I," at the beginning of the book, not just helpful, but necessary.

Elena Greco and Lila Cerullo, who met as children and rivals (and sometimes enemies) in the first volume, epitomize the changes occurring in Naples in the aftermath of World War II, with education being the catalyst for many of these changes. Lila, however, decides as a young teen to end her schooling and help with her father's business, while Elena continues. Passionate and temperamental, Lila constantly alienates those around her, and, with her eventual marriage, she has the financial resources to buy what she wants, whenever she wants, and the ability to use her position for personal payback for old grudges. Her husband has allied himself financially with the Solara family, camorrist criminals who are far more organized than Stefano's father was, making some of her own activities risky for her husband. Her only real friend is Elena, but that relationship is complicated by Elena's own obligations regarding school, and, more importantly, by the fact that Lila has no idea what it takes to be a real friend.

Elena escapes most of the tumult that Lila leaves in her wake when she departs from Naples for more schooling. Her own numerous love interests constantly compete for time with her academic commitments, and when she is at home in Naples, she wearies of Lila's imperious demands. Conditioned by her own insecurities and her academic challenges, Elena is unable to relax and come to know herself as a person independent of her culture, though she recognizes that "class" and her ability to find new opportunities outside Naples are all connected to her education. As she faces her uncertain future, she becomes a fascinating study. Perhaps her new opportunities in the wider world will become the focus of the final volume.

With more than eight hundred pages in the first two volumes, this trilogy is truly epic in length, and in its depiction of Naples in the aftermath of war, primarily in My Brilliant Friend, it adds epic themes and ideas. In this second novel, however, the initial interest in these repeating characters from postwar Naples may begin to wane for some readers as the novel focuses more on the minutiae of the women's daily lives - small details and not grand epic themes - especially concerning their turbulent, often violent, love lives. The tears and scenes of recriminations, which we see wasted on the novel's men for whom the "rules" of behavior do not apply, may become wearisome for some readers, and the novel may begin to feel claustrophobic, more romantic than epic in its focus.

A great book that gives a compassionate, sometimes enraged, voice to the concerns of young women
By nina lalumia
I loved the first book, My Brilliant Friend, and didn't believe it could get better, but it does!
The drama of the two teen-age girls is more painful, more heartbreaking, and perhaps hard for some to take.
But their strength and beauty shines through, and we get to learn more about the history of post WWII Italy.
Some of this may be difficult to follow for those who are unfamiliar with Italian political and intellectual life.
But if you've read some Gramsci, you'll eat it up. It also deals with issues that are virtually universal among young women growing up all over the world. The book deals with frankly and insightfully with the challenges that teenage girls face as they grow into women, sexual, intellectual and political.
