"Choice, February 2010" an indispensable research, library, and archival companion for students and researchers that are interested in bibliomancy, calligraphy, specifically Arabic, Qur anic manuscripts, penmanship, bookbinding, papermaking, decoration, and the tools associated with all these crafts. Praise for this monumental effort is essentially superfluous and no library or centre which is concerned with the Islamic manuscript and book tradition should be without the set. About the Author
Georg Simmel (1858–1918) taught at the University of Berlin and, later, at the University of Strasbourg. His many books include The Philosophy of Money, On Social Differentiation, and Rembrandt: An Essay in the Philosophy of Art. John A. Y. Andrews is consultant to the Rhode Island Medicaid program. Donald N. Levine is the Peter B. Ritzma Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Chicago and the author of, most recently, Powers of the Mind: The Reinvention of Liberal Learning in America.

Please, will somebody tell me what this means?

This book has a beautiful picture of Georg Simmel on the front cover,and the back cover has blurbs by very famous people (Horkheimer, Park, Habermas). But they say how great Simmel is, not how good the book is.

I could not figure out what Simmel was trying to say. If someone told me Simmel was parodying the Germanic idealist literary tradition of the time, I would be prepared to believe it. Here is one sentence chosen at random (p. 63): "The inorganic body is distinguished from the living one above all by this: the form that defines it is determined from outside... The organic body, however, produces its form from within."

Well, I do declare! That is really deep and insightful. If you are about eight years old. The whole book reminded me of the movie "Being There" in which Peter Sellers is mentally retarded but everyone takes his pithy statements seriously because he dresses impeccably and has a perfect upper class British accent.

Perhaps some reader will tell me what this book is really all about.

Her essays and poems range over broad territory, moving from the plight of undocumented migrant workers to memories of her grandmother, from Aztec religion to the agony of writing. A WONDERFUL ASSORTMENT OF ANZALDUÁ’S PROSE AND POETRY

Gloria Anzaldúa (1942-2004) also wrote/edited This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, This Bridge We Call Home: Radical Visions for Transformation, Interviews/Entrevistas, Making Face, Making Soul/Haciendo Caras: Creative and Critical Perspectives by Feminists of Color, The Reader, etc.

She wrote in the Preface to this 1987 book, “The psychological borderlands, the sexual borderlands and the spiritual borderlands are not particular to the Southwest. In fact, the borderlands are physically present wherever two or more cultures edge each other, where people of different races occupy the same territory, where under, lower, middle and upper classes touch, where the space between two individuals shrinks with intimacy. I am a border woman. I grew up between two cultures, the Mexican (with a heavy Indian influence) and the Anglo (as a member of a colonized people in our own territory). I have been straddling that… border, and others, all my life. It’s not a comfortable territory to live in, this place of contradictions. Hatred, anger, and exploitation are the prominent features of this landscape…

“This book, then, speaks of my existence. My preoccupations with the inner life of the Self, and with the struggle of the Self amidst adversity and violation; with the confluence of primordial images; with the unique positionings consciousness takes at these confluent streams, and with my almost instinctive urge to communicate, to speak, to write about life on the borders, life in the shadows. Books saved my sanity, knowledge opened the locked places in me and taught me how to survive and then how to soar… and words, my passion for the daily struggle to render them concrete in the world and on paper, to render them flesh, keeps me alive. The switching of ‘codes’ in this book from English to Castillian Spanish to the North Mexican dialect to Tex-Mex to a sprinkling of Nahuatl to a mixture of all of these, reflects my language, a new language---the language of the Borderlands. There, at the juncture of cultures, languages cross-pollinate and are revitalized; they die and are born.”

She observes, “Culture forms our beliefs. We perceive the version of reality that it communicates. Dominant paradigms, predefined concepts that exist as unquestionable, unchallengeable, are transmitted to us through the culture. Culture is made by those in power---men. Males make the rules and laws; women transmit them… The culture expects women to show greater acceptance of, and commitment to, the value system than men. She suggests, “Today, la Virgen de Guadalupe is the single most potent religious, political and cultural image of the Chicanlo/mexicano. She, like my race, is a synthesis of the old world and the new, of the religion and culture of the two races in our psyche, the conquerors and the conquered. She is the symbol of the mestizo true to his or her Indian values… Because Guadalupe took upon herself the psychological and physical devastation of the conquered and oppressed indio, she is our spiritual, political and psychological symbol… Guadalupe unites people of different races, religions, languages: Chicano Protestants, American Indians and whites…” (Pg. 30)

She explains, “So, if you really want to hurt me, talk badly about my language. Ethnic identity is twin skin to linguistic identity---I am my language. Until I can take pride in my language, I cannot take pride in myself. Until I can accept as legitimate Chicano Texas Spanish, Tex-Mes and all the other languages I speak, I cannot accept the legitimacy of myself. Until I am free to write bilingually and to switch codes without having always to translate while I still have to speak English or Spanish when I would rather speak Spanglish, and as long as I have to accommodate the English speakers rather than having them accommodate me, my tongue will be illegitimate. I will no longer be made to feel ashamed of existing. I will have my voice; Indian, Spanish, white. I will have my serpent’s tongue---my woman’s voice, my sexual voice, my poet’s voice. I will overcome the tradition of silence.” (Pg. 59)

She states, “The Writing is my whole life, it is my obsession. This vampire which is my talent does not suffer other suitors. Daily I court it, offer my neck to its teeth. This is the sacrifice which the act of creation requires, a blood sacrifice. For only through the body, through the pulling of flesh, can the human soul be transformed. And for images, words, stories to have this transformative power, they must arise from the human body---flesh and bone---and from the Earth’s body---stone, sky, liquid, soil. This work, these images, piercing tongue or ear lobes with cactus needle, are my offerings, are my Aztecan blood sacrifices.” (Pg. 75)

This book contains some of Anzaldúa’s most pointed and passionate writing. It will be great interest to those who already love her writings, or as an excellent introduction to her for those who don’t.

Very informative, well worth the money.

I was a bit reluctant about purchasing this at first, given Prima's notorious reputation. In my experience, their guides have been pretty terrible compared to ones like the official Nintendo ones. However, Nintendo stopped producing guides a few years ago, so we're pretty much stuck with brands like Prima and BradyGames. That said, I was very much surprised when I began using this.

Firstly, let me just say that Ocarina of Time itself doesn't really require a strategy guide; the game is fairly straightforward. This is really a collector's item. I bought it to have the heart piece and skulltula locations nearby while playing. In terms of information, this guide does a wonderful job. It's very easy to understand, and it's composed of five different sections, including one dedicated to Master Quest (the 2nd quest in the game).

I don't really have any complaints about this guide. Is it worth the standard twenty dollar price tag of a strategy guide? Probably not. You can find all of this information (and way more) on websites like GameFAQs, but this is a convenient reference to go by. If you think you'll want to do a complete run of this, I Would definitely recommend it, but if you just want to do the story, then I say play the game without the guide so you'll have more fun.

Very comprehensive guide

Okay so I definitely bought the 3DS just because Nintendo decided to remake Ocarina of Time. Needless to say anymore about that, i will mention that this was one of my favorite games to play when I was younger. I Actually still have two excellent condition guides from the N64 edition of this game. 1st I have the BRADYGAMES Official strategy guide and second I have the Official Nintendo Player's guide.

This new Ocarina of Time game guide created by Prima is amazing. It is so much more comprehensive of the entire game than either of the other two books. There are no details left out, the people at Prima definitely spent a lot of time orchestrating this book. The maps are all clearly and accurately marked so that you can find anything you are looking for whether it be a gold skulltulas, a heart-piece, or just a treasure chest in a dungeon. The older books that I have are each lacking in their maps and side-quests. Not to mention that the older books don't even cover the Master's quest found on the 3DS edition of this game. In addition to that the older books don't have nearly as much information about finding items and collecting skulltulas, or how to make your way through the temples. Plus the button system to play the songs for the ocarina are completely different. Clearly the strategy guides that are made today are quite a bit better than the older ones.

I bet if you wanted to you can look around on the internet and find all of this information for free, but it wouldn't be as well organized and you would probably end up having to use multiple sources, which when I'm playing a game i find to be a pain in the butt. This book has an excellent table of contents right in the front that will direct you to find whatever you're currently looking for. The guide basically has a step by step strategy you could just read along and do exactly what it says or you can find your way through the castle and when you get stuck just find where you are at and read the book. The guide has mini small paragraph by paragraph explanations that assist you along the way, that can easily be skipped if you want to.

So basically if you're wanting to have a comprehensive guide of this game, in a neat, well organized, colorful book then I would definitely recommend this Strategy guide. It's not too expensive either. This book is packed with useful data in a well organized fashion. So if you are like me and you enjoy having a nice strategy guide book then I would recommend getting this one.

Helpful Guide to a very enjoyable game

So you have never purchased one of those computer game guides. I know, you say those books are for amateurs and softies who can't figure out things for themselves. Real gamers don't need to be told what lever to push or goon to crush to receive the next magic pellet - they should be able to figure it out all by their lonesome. Well, there is some validity to that POV and I will not try to convince you otherwise.

For the rest of us who may enjoy a particular game a well-illustrated guide complements the pleasure of playing. Having read many Zelda/Link guides very carefully I am aware that there are many aspects to those games that are not apparent- in fact unless you were informed you would completely miss out on some very cool aspects of the game.

My time is limited so my interest here is more with collecting the Zelda/Link games and guidebooks. I like the continuity of the game franchise, the creativity of the game play and the high quality of the artwork both in the games and the guidebooks. The "Ocarina of Time" guide keeps the high standards of other Zelda/Link books and will enhance your game play.

About the Author

Kenneth R. White, PhD, APRN-BC, FACHE, FAAN, is the University of Virginia (UVA) Medical Center endowed professor of nursing and associate dean for strategic partnerships and innovation in the School of Nursing at UVA. Great text covering proven Baldrige successes in healthcare management

An excellent text reviewing Baldrige winners' approach to management and success. It is inspiring in it's discussion of transformational culture and servant leadership. It is a great overview of the breadth and depth of healthcare organizations as well. I recommend it for new health care leader, or even seasoned leadership/COO/CEO, as this goes over how the very best are doing it- today...

Twenty innovative houses engendered by the collaboration between Hungarian-born Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer (1902-81) and American architect Herbert Beckhard (b. 1926) are examined in this handsome volume. Breuer (famous for the eponymous chair he designed), who emigrated to the U.S. in 1937, and Beckhard, who now heads a Manhattan-based architectural firm, favored large, open interior spaces, fieldstone walls, uninterrupted glazed surfaces and structures that "float" above their sites by means of posts, trusses and supporting walls. Despite these similarities, the houses they designed together, in California, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Switzerland, are highly individualistic, modernist compositions reflecting their clients' lifestyles. Masello, a contributor to Architectural Record , affectionately walks readers through these eclectic, deliberately asymmetrical dwellings, aided by 100 black-and-white photographs and 16 pages in color.

A Must Read for an Architecture Enthusiast

An in-depth analysis of collaborated works between Marcel Breur & Herbert Beckhard through their professional lives together. They are conveyed as architects who get along well with one another both professionally & personally. Marcel Breur is depicted as an architect that didn't want to force his idea upon his clients but respecting their wishes despite in some instances, that compromised with his vision of how the final outcome should be like. Ironically, thru interaction with his clients that his greatest works are produced which are discussed in detail in this book. A chapter is dedicated for every & each houses that are worth mentioning. We are told of Japanese influence upon their work, the usage of natural material in their works i.e the international style buildings which are rampant during their time. All the works are displayed in black & white photos but towards the end, colour photos are shown & that's when everything hit you as you're able to see the buildings from the other perspective. Morevoer, building layouts are provided as well. I guess the exclusion of colour in the beginning is enabling us to appreciate the form more rather than been confused with the detraction, ie. colour. To be honest, it works well in this instance. I also enjoy the layout of the book. It is easy to read, and informative. In a way, this is a semi-biography book of those 2 famous architects. Towards the end, it's heart touching to read about Herbert's reflection on the day when Marcel handed him a note, wanted him to announce to the firm that he would be retiring thereafter. It's interesting also to read about Richard Meier's beginning in Marcel's firm as well.

A highly illuminating and accessible book.

So many architectural books can get lost in jargon, but this one never does. It's extremely readable, and its insights into the work and careers of Marcel Breuer and Herbert Beckhard are always on point and thought-provoking. The book also happens to be handsomely produced, with lots of back-and-white and color photographs of their finished work. This book is essential, I think, as a reference, and a pleasure to read throughout.
