I loved this play. It's entirely in German, so probably best for intermediate learners who want to expand their vocabulary, or native speakers. I found it highly entertaining and amusing. A great book which I kept even after I was done with the class.

Very comprehensive and useful

This book represents quite an evolution in the DSM casebook series. In the past, these books would offer one or two pages of a brief vignette, with diagnostic considerations included at the end. These cases were often frustrating for students, as the information provided was scant, leaving more questions than answers. In most instances, it was difficult to come up with a DSM diagnosis, let alone justify how the decision was made.

This book is a major advance in casebook presentation. There are 31 chapters, most of which focus on DSM diagnoses which can be given to children and adolescents. This not only includes diagnoses such as ADHD, ODD, and Autism, but also Psychotic Disorders, Depression, Non-suicidal Self Injury, Bereavement, Disinhibited Attachment, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Sleep disturbance, Substance use, and Bipolar Disorder.

Consistent with previous editions of DSM casebooks, there are 2-3 pages of background information provided, with emphasis on the client's current symptoms. As we would hope and expect with a child-focused manual, the chapters also include any known developmental/medical history, family history, and past psychiatric history. This was notably absent in previous editions of the Casebook. The rationale for the DSM 5 diagnosis is then offered, with treatment recommendations provided.

In most instances, the treatment section of the chapters is approached in two ways. One includes psychotherapeutic modalities, while the other addresses psychopharmacologic strategies.

The cases included in the book range from fairly simple matters to highly complex. This makes it useful to include in teaching, which is why I bought the book. The chapters also help the reader gain a good understanding of differential diagnosis. A model for diagnostic decision making is included at the end of the book.

Overall, this book represents a major improvement in the DSM casebook series. I highly recommend this for practitioners who want to learn more about the process of diagnosing and treating mental disorders in children and adolescents.

Detailed Overview

Being interested in reading processes, especially in learned languages, this book came to me with some potential. It was potential largely fullfilled.

"Interactive Approaches" deals a lot with the theory, such as various models for reading, (the Stanovich Model gets a fair airing), but that is also counter-balanced with a great deal on the implications that are there for teaching. There is also some discussion on the reasearch that has been performed on readers and what the results have shown.

The book is a series of essays written by various people in the linguistics field, and they have some very interesting things to contribute.

In short, I have found their ideas and comments of immense value in my own studies. This would make a good reference book, though I am not sure anyone would want to read it from cover to cover. It is a good book that gets you into some of the more contemporary research on reading processes.

Inflammatory and fascinating

David Mamet's Oleanna was polarizing when it premiered on Broadway--audiences tended to sympathize with one character and hate the other.
The experience of reading Oleanna rather than seeing it is a rewarding one. The play features two characters: John, a professor up for tenure, and Carol, his student. Each of these characters is in the midst of their own problems when we meet them in the first act--John is arguing with his wife and in the midst of buying a new house (as a celebration of his impending tenure), and Carol is desperately trying not to fail John's class. When the show opens, Carol has come to John to ask him not to fail her--unfortunately, John is on and off the phone with his realtor and his wife and barely pays attention to Carol. This is the setup from which the rest of the play unravels.
Ultimately, Carol accuses John of sexual harassment--and, although it is easy to say that John never propositions Carol, the reader can see where Carol might have gotten that idea. John, in his haste to leave, says and does things that in retrospect (the second act) seem like mistakes.
Each is a full and fascinating character--John stands on the brink of losing everything that has ever mattered to him, and Carol becomes an ardent feminist activist in the third act. To say more would be a spoiler.
This play is a fascinating character study, examining academia, language, and the startling effect of bad communication. A brilliant and biting play.

David Mamet's Masterpiece

Known most for his unique drama "Glengarry Glen Ross," David Mamet has written another masterpiece of a play. "Oleanna" is an unforgettable play that will leave you unsure of who's side you're on until the last remaining moments that will stay with you for a long time.
The story is very simple, or it starts out simple. It all starts as an innocent meeting between a school teacher and his female student. He knows there's been problems with her doing well in the class, so he offers to help. Then before you know it, everything goes to hell and shortly there are accusations of sexism, abuse of power, and sexual harassment. This is play that will mess with your head, leaving you unsure of who is in the right, if any of them are.
I was hooked from the very first page. As soon as I started, I couldn't put it down, and I had no idea of where it was heading. What's great is that it reads very quickly. It's short but accomplishes what it's trying to do. Once again Mamet has a talent of capturing human behavior and reflecting it back through his writing. He can take the simplest conflict and magnify it a hundred times. And once again he is able to catch us off guard when it counts the most.
"Oleanna" is a must-read for anyone who enjoys reading plays, or just reading in general. Like I said, it's very short so chances are that as soon as you start it you'll be able to finish it in no time. You'll be sad when it's over so quickly, but will be happy to re-read it again and again. A terrific masterpiece that is beautifully written and structured on every front, David Mamet's "Oleanna" is a breathtaking read.

Envy, Greed, and Political Correctness

I have seen three separate productions of David Mamet's controversial two-hander "Oleanna", and the audience has been driven into polarized frenzy each time. Mamet correctly assumes that the engines that drive contemporary society are envy and greed, and his corrosive attack on the verbal manipulations of political correctness is razor-sharp. Mamet's use of language is extraordinary and in this play -- for a change -- the characters are educated, white-collar academics, not filthy-mouthed lowlifes. Obscenity, however, takes many forms. Do yourself a favour: when you take this book home, READ IT ALOUD with someone else. You will discover that "Oleanna" is a passionate, provocative, and powerful piece of theatre.

No English in this book at all (just so you know); if you are planning to teach yourself, this may not be the best book for that

Very good book- since it's "immersion" that means there is absolutely NO English in here, whatsoever.... Which can make it tricky (if you're not in a class- perhaps impossible); but HEY when I look words up elsewhere, I remember them better, so maybe that's intentional. The example conversations on the CD are SO fast it is IMPOSSIBLE for a beginner to follow-- I think they did this so that we can get used to 'normal' conversation speed and different accents... however, as a person very new to Spanish, even in my third class and finishing up this book, it is still much too fast for me to understand. I can only understand 1 out of 20 words. I appreciate the desire to have us listen to current and contemporary conversation, but does EVERY conversation have to be 100 mph? Perhaps don't give your conversationalists espresso right before recording them! :) The only way I can find out what they're saying (they are also using words/phrases that aren't in our book, too, which our teacher then explains to us) is by reading the transcript from the teacher's book. Perhaps in the next version you can have every other conversation be fast if that's important to you, but please let some be relaxed- not boring, but not on speed, either. In normal English conversations people sometimes speak slowly and thoughtfully, and in a relaxed manner-- if this ever happens in Hispanic countries, please record conversations at this speed to represent those conversations as well as the fast ones.
